The Program

The award winning Montréal based pianist Philip Chiu joins Trio Arkel to open Season 9’s Fantasia program. Philip, one of Canada’s sought after chamber musicians, has been described by La Presse as “… a pianist-painter who turns every musical idea into a beautiful array of colors.”

Jean Cras was renowned for painting a vivid picture of his home in Brest in the region of Brittany, his travels to Africa, and his voyages on the seas as a French officer in the Navy. Although Cras’ duties as an officer in the French Navy left little time to devote to music and composition, the pieces he did create were some of the most inventive compositions of the 20th century. Cras’ String Trio is one of his best known works and incorporates a wide range of styles and influences. In 1932 André Himonet described it as a “miraculous” work that achieved “perfectly balanced sonority and a plenitude of expression which one dare not choose.”

Franz Schubert was a prolific composer in the late Classical and early Romantic eras and is considered among the greatest Western Classical music composers. When Schubert submitted Fantasia to the publisher he noted as an example of “my strivings after the highest in art.” Fantasia was a term dating from the Renaissance to describe an instrumental composition that is not limited by a particular musical form and design. In this particular piece the four movements are interconnected and played without pause. Only punctuated with abrupt shifts in key that were a Schubert trademark. Arno Lücker said it best when he described the piece, “ We hear [Schubert’} soul pouring itself out, like a nightingale in the flowering shrubs; softly melting away in tender feelings, drifting about like a lover’s warm breath. And yet we are totally enthralled, and Schubert’s tones are like thunder as well! Thus he managed to transport us, to take us away with him and to pluck the most sensitive strings of our hearts.”

Belgian Guillaume Lekeu studied at the Paris Conservatory in the late 19th century under César Franck and subsequently Vincent d’Indy. Lekeu’s primary influences were Franck, Wagner, and Beethoven which inspired his melodic compositions that were often characterized with a certain melancholy. The Piano Quartet was commissioned by the famous violinist and fellow Belgian Eugène Ysaÿe. The first movement is considered immense, much like a powerful storm it has waves and “torrents of emotion”. The break in this musical storm is broken by the lyrical melodies which transition us to the second movement which transitions to a nocturnal and love scene. Tragically Lekeu died of typhoid fever at the age of 24 before he could complete this piece. D’Indy, whom regarded his student Lekeu as a genius, brought his composition to fruition with the addition of a seven bar ending. Lekeu was a highly talented promising composer whose musical promise was cut short by his untimely death.
