About this event
Join The Friends of Short Hills Park and Brad Demers, author of the local Niagara Nature column, for an illuminating experience with the fireflies of Niagara. Free event, suitable for families. Information will also be provided about the Friends of Short Hills Provincial Park.
This is a free event. Please note that dates are somewhat tentative and may change depending on the presence of fireflies (or lack thereof). If firefly numbers are weak leading up to the event, a reschedule may be offered; conversely, if firefly numbers are strong and interest warrants it, earlier or additional dates may be offered.
The walk will start at the Pelham Road parking lot of Short Hills Provincial Park. After a short discussion about fireflies, we will hike a short distance down the Black Walnut Trail, just past Scout Camp Road and the bridge over 12 Mile Creek.
Be aware that ticks are present in the park. It is recommended to wear long-sleeve shirts and pants tucked into your footwear to reduce exposure to ticks. The trail may be muddy so hiking boots or waterproof, closed-toe footwear is recommended.
Bring a flashlight. You may want to wear insect repellent.
Note – this event is scheduled for two nights. Both nights will go ahead as long as there is not heavy rain. Please check the weather forecast. In the event that there is inclement weather on June 29, any registrants are welcome to attend on June 30th instead.
