Focus groups: Purposes & processes

The Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Migration and Integration is the first ever CERC awarded to Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University), building on the university’s strengths and commitments in the area of immigration and settlement studies.The CERC in Migration and Integration is producing innovative and usable knowledge on the links between migration and post-migration processes, forced and voluntary mobility, internal and international migration, and the role of countries of origin and transit. The CERC pays special attention to Canadian realities while also engaging in comparative research with and among other countries in various global regions.

This workshop will explore the possibilities and limitations of conducting focus group discussions as a process for data collection

Focus groups can be very useful to researchers for problem framing, idea generation, program evaluation, story-telling, decision-making, and data-analysis. In this workshop, you will learn about organizing and conducting focus groups, and examine their possibilities and limitations. You will be expected to engage in simulations and role-play, which we will collectively critique. You are encouraged to bring your research ideas to share with others so we can help you figure out if and how focus groups might fit into your plans.In this interactive workshop, participants will engage in seminar-style discussions and other learning activities, including simulations and role play. Video recording of simulations will be used for critique and feedback. Participants are encouraged to bring research ideas to share with others to plan how they may use focus group discussions for their own research projects.This workshop will be led by Mehrunnisa Ali, Professor, School of Early Childhood Studies, Ryerson University.CERC Migration supports graduate students and emerging research scholars with research training opportunities. The Migration Research Gyms provide specialized methodology and professional development training through intensive workshops.
