Forest Bathing

Leighton Art Centre is located on 80-acres of spectacular foothills landscape 20 minutes SW of Calgary. As a museum, art gallery and education space, Leighton Art Centre offers contemporary visual art exhibitions, festivals and sales, education programs, and hands-on workshops for artists of all levels.Leighton Art Centre is a not-for-profit organization; we encourage admission by donation.The privilege of Leighton Art Centre’s presence on 80 acres of foothills landscape within Treaty 7 territory is combined with respect, humility, and responsibility to be caretakers of the land. We acknowledge the people of these traditional lands which include the Blackfoot Confederacy comprised of the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani, as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda, including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3. We welcome all people who make their home in the Treaty 7 territory of Southern Alberta and who act as respectful stewards to this land, where we learn, create, and build relationships in meaningful ways.

Leighton Art Centre

With no specific destination, we will wander, observe and immerse ourselves in nature.

Come experience a series of guided meditations that will bring you into the present moment, opening the doors of connection to nature and the senses. Each walk is approximately 2 hours long and only covers a small amount of distance (roughly 1km). To complete the experience there is a gesture of reciprocity which involves having some tea and a snack.What is Forest Bathing? Shirin-Yoku, which is the Japanese practice of Forest Bathing, means to bath in the atmosphere of the forest. It refers to the practice of spending time in nature for the purpose of health, wellness and happiness. It is the practice of connection with the natural world and with each other. Forest Bathing is a slow-paced/ gentle walk or wander in nature.Science has also shown the health benefits of spending time in nature. A refund will be only be issued to participants if the workshop is cancelled by the workshop coordinator due to insufficient enrollment, extreme weather conditions, or Covid-19 restrictions. Workshops may be cancelled prior to the start date and participants will be notified via email and/or phone, and a full refund will be processed. Withdrawal from workshops for medical reasons must be accompanied by a doctor's medical note and must be received by the Leighton workshop coordinator prior to the workshop start date to be qualified for a full refund.Artist/ Instructor Biography: Alberta DeFrancesco is a locally based artist, naturalist and guide. Growing up in Alberta, she has been surrounded by some of the most majestic landscapes and environments. Being able to combine her love of nature and the outdoors has led her to the path of becoming a guide. Certified as an Apprentice Interpretive Guide and Nature and Forest Therapy Guide, Alberta has a combined 10 years of experience of spending time in nature.
