Fruit tree guilds are mini-ecosystems created by curating a community of plants with different functions around the base of a fruit tree to benefit the overall health and produciton of the tree. We will go over the various functions of the different layers of a fruit tree guild, along with plant recommendations and design elements. This technique has many applications and can be customized to suit the unique needs of the species in your own yard. Participants will:-Explore an existing Pawpaw guild that is several years into production and learn about the various plants and their unique roles within the guild-Work together to build and plant a second Pawpaw guild**The hands-on portion involves moving small rocks and logs, using a wheelbarrow, shoveling, raking, and bending. If you are not physically able to participate in the construction (or certain aspects of the construction) of the fruit tree guild, please notify us so we can prepare accordingly. Everyone, regardless of physical ability, is welcome to join the workshop and participate to the extent they are able to, and observe the second half if desired. This is an outdoor event with wheelchair access and limited parking. There is no washroom onsite, and there are often mosquitos! Please come prepared with water, sunscreen, bug-spray, gardening gloves, and a hand-trowel if you have one. All other equipment and materials are provided.
