It funds projects to develop innovative resources that build the knowledge and skills of diverse career professionals. At Cannexus23, the Future Skills Centre will showcase a varied program that explores the significant initiatives that are responding to the latest trends affecting Canadian career development and employment services. The event invites the audience to be key players in shaping and achieving a new vision for career development in this country. Drawing from emerging research and pilot project insights, the sessions will explore innovations designed to enhance the accessibility, benefits and delivery of Canadian career development and employment services. It will also look to strategies to support employers as they navigate change and support working Canadians. The program will include the following key components: <ul><li>An examination of the labour market context</li><li>An exploration of the role of both the career development sector and of employers in addressing their current and future workforce needs</li><li>An articulation of the supports needed by the career development sector to meet future demands; and</li><li>Audience engagement in the shaping of plans for Canada’s first ever Career Development Professional Centre</li></ul>Participants will be able to learn about best practices and innovation models for both career services and training programs, gain a deeper knowledge of the key current and future labour market trends, and participate in discussions with peers to create a more effective and inclusive career guidance system.

Session Descriptions Looking Ahead: Responsive Career Pathways for the Future Karen Myers, CEO, Blueprint	 Malika Asthana, Manager for Strategy and Public Affairs, D2LJennifer Pierce, Vice-president, Talent Management and Diversity, Equity &amp; Inclusion, WalmartLisa Melo, VP Learning &amp; Performance, RBCThis session will delve into key labour market trends shaping the future of work. It will highlight workers who are most affected by these shifts and the challenges they face navigating an increasingly complex skills system. Be part of shaping a vision for Career Hubs of the Future that help Canadians gain the skills they need to thrive in a changing labour market.	 Learning outcomes:<ul><li>Awareness of trends shaping future of work and labour market </li><li>Understanding of growing demands of the career development sector</li><li>Increased awareness of what is needed to meet emerging and future labour market needs</li></ul>As Blueprint’s founder and leader, Karen Myers has a developed a strong reputation for delivering solutions to address pressing public policy issues. Karen has extensive experience as a researcher, policy analyst, performance consultant and program evaluator. Malika Asthana (she/her) is the Manager for Strategy and Public Affairs for D2L, a global learning technology leader supporting millions of people in K-12, higher education, and businesses learning online and in person. As part of her role at D2L, Malika leads the development of strategic thought leadership on the future of work and learning, including researching and writing an annual whitepaper, and convening an Executive Summit. Outside of work, Malika serves on People for Education’s National Advisory Council on the Future of Public Education, co-runs the Wonklabs policy education platform, and regularly speaks about career planning for students and recent graduates.Jennifer Pierce joined Walmart Canada in 2019 as Vice-president, Talent Management and Diversity, Equity &amp; Inclusion In this role, Jennifer champions a culture of belonging with a concentrated focus on advocating for and accelerating the advancement of female and under represented talent. Jennifer introduced a new female accelerator program that has seen a 47% increase in the advancement of female talent by at least one level in the Walmart Canada store network in the first 10 months of the program.Lisa Melo leads the enterprise Learning and Performance group, which designs and delivers innovative learning to help RBC’s 95,000 employees around the world do their best work. Her team also orchestrates award-winning development programs such as RBC’s Career Launch Program, a one-year internship program that provides participants with networking opportunities and a solid foundation early in their careers.

Responsive Career Pathways in Practice	 Dr. Tannis Goddard, CEO, MixtModeTrina Stanford, Project Associate, Canadian Career Development FoundationAmie Haughn, Director, Employment Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and ImmigrationKimberly White, Director of Workplace Initiatives, Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and ImmigrationThis session will explore how innovation and collaboration is showing up in novel new programs and models that can advance career development services. It will highlight research insights coming out of a project with the Government of Nova Scotia that brings together governments, employers and career services. The session will discuss how this work could have broader application across Canada, and how it could inform policy and practice going forward.Learning outcomes:<ul><li>Increased awareness of the key components of innovative career development programs</li><li>Increased awareness of responsive career pathways</li><li>Better understanding of how career practitioners can work effectively with employers, governments and community organizations</li></ul>Dr. Tannis Goddard has extensive experience researching, designing and delivering f2f and online career development services. Tannis works as a researcher, consultant and trainer to advance and strengthen the career development sector.Trina Stanford is a Project Associate at CCDF supporting the In Motion &amp; Momentum+ program and other initiatives. She has over 15 years of front-line experience in the career and employment services sector.Amie Haughn’s passionate pursuit is to ensure that Nova Scotians have the employment services they need to support their attachment and connection to the labour market. As a former self-employment business counsellor, manager of employment services, and economic planning and development officer, she has had a 25-year career in business development, labour market development and employment services and is now responsible for oversight and direction of Nova Scotia’s publicly funded employment services.Kimberly White has been providing leadership in workforce development for over 20 years working with a wide array of stakeholders including sectors, not for profit organizations, learning institutions, and government. Currently she is leading the Workplace Initiatives Division with the Department of Labour, Skills, and Immigration. A team dedicated to supporting employers find and build a skilled workforce. Kimberly’s educational background is in communication and HR.

Empowering Career Practitioners to Guide a New Future Sareena Hopkins, Executive Director, Canadian Career Development Foundation	 Dr. Candy Ho, Assistant Professor, University of the Fraser ValleyTrina Maher, President, Bridging Concepts &amp; Senior Human Environment Specialist, WSPBuilding the capacity of practitioners and provider organizations to meet emerging needs is essential. This session will explore the skills and knowledge that are required at the practitioner and organizational level and what is needed to ensure capacity building opportunities are accessible to working practitioners. We will present a vision and plans for Canada's first-ever Career Development Professional Centre. Learning outcomes:<ul><li>Understand the need to build practitioner and provider organization capacity </li><li>Explore skills and knowledge needed at practitioner and organizational levels </li><li>Learn about specific FSC-funded projects/initiatives that are building capacity </li></ul>Sareena Hopkins works to strengthen the reach and impact of the career development sector by moving from ideas to action in areas of public policy, research and development, capacity building and advocacy. She is the Chair of the International Centre for Career Development and Public Policy and was awarded the Gold Medal for International Leadership in Career Development in 2014.Dr. Candy Ho is the inaugural Assistant Professor, Integrative Career and Capstone Learning in the University of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia, Canada. In this unique capacity, she teaches courses that help students consider their educational and life experiences, and how these experiences can help them achieve their short- and long-term goals, ultimately helping them design the life they want to live. She also holds teaching positions in Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Educational Studies department and in Douglas College's Career Development Practitioner Program.Trina Maher is President of Bridging Concepts, an Indigenous consultancy with the vision to see "Indigenous peoples enjoy meaningful careers in Canadian workplaces." Since 1999, she has helped corporations to accelerate their Indigenous inclusion goals.

Resiliency Through Adversity Tareq Hadhad, Founder and CEO, Peace by Chocolate Join Tareq on an emotional journey from Syria to Canada with heart-breaking and perspective-shaping stops along the way. From sunny days in Syria where the scent of roses filled the air to the beginning of conflict and war. Listen as Tareq shares the fear and confusion that came when violence and danger begin to slowly surround his family. Understand what it is really like to spend days hiding in your basement, praying for safety and food and medicine. Learn how a family made the decision to leave everything behind in search of safety outside of their homeland only to find more uncertainty and desperation as refugees in Lebanon. Witness the life-changing impact of being granted a family ticket to Canada and watch as that country's Prime Minister singles out the Hadhad family and their community for its perseverance and kindness. This is an emotional rollercoaster that will leave you feeling inspired and resolved to make your own impact on the world. Tareq Hadhad is telling his story. He was a Syrian refugee and now living his new life in Nova Scotia. He is the founder and CEO of Peace by Chocolate, the recipient of the EY Entrepreneur of The Year 2021 for Atlantic, named one of the Top 25 Immigrants in The Maritimes and awarded RBC’s top Immigrant Award and Entrepreneur of the Year in 2020. All of this has happened since Tareq’s arrival to Canada in December 2015 as a newcomer. In 2012 the Hadhad’s factory that housed the family chocolate-making business were destroyed which forced them to seek safety. Passionate about peace and entrepreneurship, his family relaunched their business to recreate the chocolates they once exported across the Middle East. In January 2020, Tareq received his official Canadian Citizenship which garnered international attention and has become one of the greatest accomplishments of his life. Tareq has spoken at several events for corporate, government and not for profit organizations both in person and online. He has done over 500 interviews with different news teams across the globe. Tareq speaks on the compelling story of his family, the positive impact of Syrian newcomers and the spirit of entrepreneurship and giving back.
