Get School'd: Intergalactic Ink

Built in 1889, theGladstone Hotelis Toronto’s oldest continually operating hotel and has been evolving as a local cultural hub since 2003 with a vision to revolutionize a hospitality model that operates at the intersection of arts, sustainability and social change.  From karaoke to weddings, book launches to burlesque, the hotel is a meeting place for local creatives and travellers, making it possible to explore and interact with the living culture of artist life in Toronto. In 2005 we invited local artists to transform our recently restored 19th century hotel rooms into 37 unique artist designed hotel rooms. Our robust art story continues still in our gallery spaces on all four floors with thought-provoking art exhibitions 365 days per year.  The Gladstone Hotel is an inviting, inclusive hospitality beacon that allows artists, neighbours, travellers and revellers to connect, collaborate, celebrate, dine, explore, participate and sing their hearts out!

What's it all about? 
Over the course of this workshop, the participants will learn the many experimental techniques of india ink and go home with a gorgeous piece of art. This highly pigmented media can create fabulous textures on watercolour paper and become a magical background for your intergalactic artwork. Techniques such as egg drop, bloom, bleed, lift, wet on wet, and wet on dry will be introduced, and once the ink is dry, they will allow for a creation of a highly personalized cosmic landscape filled with stars, constellations, and faraway galaxies. 
Who will be teaching?
Natalie Very B. is a published Polish-Canadian illustrator and educator. Her artistic career is based on investigation of whimsical shapes of feminism in today’s world, as well as teaching creative skills to the youth. Her paintings reveal many Slavic folklore influences, while myths and legends are a constant source of inspiration whenever she creates a new body of work. Equality between sexes is a major issue in today’s society and a strong incentive for her to make illustrations that depict women as beautiful, empowered, and strong. Her artwork emanates wistful longing, tangible nostalgia, and exploration of the concept of “home” as a haunting visual element.
