5 Days of Action

5 Days of Action is a free, week-long event aimed at amplifying the work groups, units and organizations (on- and off-campus) are doing to create a more diverse, inclusive and equitable campus and community throughout the year.

In-person event open to everyone.Do you want to hear from UVic grad students who are conducting research that centres the concepts of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA)?Join us for a special happy hour event at The Grad House. Great IDEAs will be a fun afternoon filled with bingo and prizes while you learn about how UVic grad students are advancing IDEA through their research.Presenter: Ambreen Shehzad Hussaini (she/her) – Art History and Visual Studies, PhD candidateTopic description: Ambreen’s research examines the role of equity in Islamic calligraphy in Pakistan by focusing on representation, decolonial art history, and cultural inclusivity. Her study delves into the colonial and post-colonial history of Islamic calligraphy, addressing the power imbalances in the traditional art histories and advances equity and social change by democratizing both the creation and understanding of Islamic calligraphy.Presenter: Bonnie Gao (she/her) – Geography, Masters candidateTopic description: Powering the Future: Youth Inclusion for an Equitable Energy Transition. Bonnie’s research explores how intergenerational equity can be upheld while addressing the climate crisis. Her research examines youth inclusion for an equitable Canadian energy transition from an intersectional lens and how energy justice can be enacted in the transition to a low-carbon economyPresenter: Karl Hare (he/him) – Geography, Masters candidateTopic description: Addressing Access To Country Foods using Ecological Modelling. Karl’s research explores how climate change is projected to impact the availability of traditional foods in the Northwest Territories. Karl is passionate about food, preserving biodiversity and including Indigenous voices in environmental management.Presenter: Lauren Sapic (she/her) – Law, Masters candidateTopic description: Exploring Rights and Remedies for Sexual Misconduct in Elite-Level Sports: An Interdisciplinary Historical Analysis. Lauren’s research directly addresses issues of equity and social change by advocating for institutional reform and the need for independent, diverse oversight bodies to address criminal behaviour within elite-level sports.
