Join us on Saturday, April 22nd, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for our climate café and art-making session in honour of Earth Day. Climate Café Explanation There are many different responses and reactions to climate change, including different emotions that may make us feel overwhelmed, burnt out from activism, or even turning away and shutting down. All of these responses are normal and common, as this is an issue much larger than us. Sometimes people feel they can’t talk about this openly with people they care about or have concerns that they’ll be perceived as depressing and negative. The climate café concept came about in response to this to allow people to share these emotions in a safe and understanding place and connect with others who feel similarly. The purpose of a climate café is to provide a reflective, safe, respectful and private space for people to express their emotional responses to the climate and environmental crisis. Participants will be guided through a sharing process where everyone has an opportunity to speak about their experiences, thoughts and feelings without discussing what we might be DOING about these issues. There is no goal to FIX anything, but rather to spend time being with these emotions and experiences. Research supports the idea that finding community and participating in this kind of sharing of our emotions and experiences can be therapeutic without being therapy. It is important to note that this is not therapy and that should you want to speak to a counsellor, you can access this through <a href="https://wellness.uoguelph.ca/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Wellness Services&#x27;</a> on-campus or off-campus providers. This event is open to University of Guelph students, staff and faculty. Facilitator Information Natalie Thomas (Evans) is an Adjunct faculty member with the Department of Philosophy here on campus and teaches at both the University of Guelph and Guelph-Humber. She is also a practicing psychotherapist (qualifying) with a small private practice that specializes in climate-aware therapy, among other things. She is also a regional coordinator for the Climate Psychology Alliance of North America. Event FormatAfter reviewing some basic guidelines for the event, participants will have time to share and express their emotions and experiences related to climate change and environmental crises. Please sign up so that we know how many will attend. We may break into smaller groups for sharing. While everyone is encouraged to share and participate, nobody will be forced to speak. Further resources for support, connecting and learning will be provided. The art-making session will be an optional activity that takes place AFTER the climate café. Various art supplies for collaging, sketching, and painting will be provided for FREE to participants (while supplies last). You&#x27;re welcome to bring your own supplies as well.F﻿REE coffee and tea will be provided to participants who bring their own reusable mugs.This event is open to University of Guelph students, staff and faculty.
