Hackathon 101: Get Ready with Hackergal!

Hackergalis a Canadian charity with a mission to close the gender gap by reshaping who leads, who builds, and who belongs in STEAM through future-ready learning experiences.We work directly with educators, education systems, and organizations across the country - providing educators, community leaders, and parents with the tools they need to increase girls’ and gender-diverse learners’ access to STEAM education in their schools and communities.We are committed to reaching more girls* and gender-diverse learners across Canada, with a focus on BIPOC communities, French-speaking communities, as well as northern, remote and rural communities. Hackergal is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion. We welcome the participation of girls, gender-diverse, non-binary, and two-spirit learners. We use an inclusive definition of “girls” and “women” and welcome the participation of all learners who identify as girls.

<h3>Who We Are</h3>Since 2015, <a href="https://hackergal.org/" title="https://hackergal.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Hackergal</a> has empowered educators across Canada in bringing digital skill education into their classrooms and communities. Our goal is to inspire Canadian girls* and gender-diverse learners to code, create, and become the tech leaders of tomorrow. <h3>Interested in hosting a day-long, project-based STEAM experience for your learners?</h3>Join us for a 45 minute info session on how you can successfully host and facilitate an in-person National Hackergal Hackathon at your school on April 23rd, 2026, with Hackergal’s support and resources! <h3>Wait - What is a Hackathon?</h3>Hackathons are events where tech enthusiasts come together over a short period of time, to brainstorm, build, and problem-solve with technology to tackle real-world challenges. At Hackergal, our challenges revolve around a different social impact theme every year! <h3>What You'll Learn in this Info Session:</h3><ul><li>What the Hackathon Day schedule on April 23rd looks like</li><li>How to prepare for Hackathon Day, and how Hackergal supports the process</li><li>An introduction to our Hackathon Toolkit, for event planning support</li><li>An introduction to our pre and post-Hackathon events and opportunities: Sparks &amp; Stories (April 16th) and National Pitch Day (April 28th)!</li><li>Past examples of Hackathon events across Canada</li></ul> <h3>This Year's Theme</h3>This year, our Hackergal Hackathon takes place on April 23rd, 2026, and our theme is ✨Stories That Spark Change ✨! We are inviting Hackergal Clubs and Learners from across Canada to design and create content that goes beyond just sharing facts about the world around us. Digital content has become more than just information sharing - It’s a powerful tool to connect, inspire, and empower communities.
