Join representatives from Boeing, Microsoft, Visier and Vancouver Coastal Health for the launch of UBC’s Master of Data Science program. Hosted by UBC Science, a panel of experts will discuss challenges and opportunities for careers in data science, and how research groups, corporations and training programs can collectively build the province’s capacity in DS.

Greg Caws<IMG STYLE="width: 193px; height: 205px; float: right;" ALT="" SRC="https://cdn.evbuc.com/eventlogos/68655879/gc.jpg" HEIGHT="285" WIDTH="286"> President, Premiers Technology Council
As president of the Premiers Technology Council, Greg brings to this role experience as a successful technology entrepreneur. He has founded and invested in several BC tech companies and sold the first company he founded to a NASDAQ corporation. After graduating from the Royal Military College of Canada as a Fuels and Material Engineer, Greg worked as an Aerospace Engineering Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force and then as an Airworthiness Inspector and Superintendent  for the Canadian Federal Government. Greg was technical architect for TELUS’s initial digital initiatives including TelusTV and the technology lead for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics bid. He served as CEO and Board Chair of VIATEC, the Vancouver Island accelerator and co-founded a big data, cloud based analytics company. Prior to his current position, Greg spent three years as the CEO of a Provincial Crown Agency responsible for economic development of Technology and Innovation, the BC Innovation Council. He is very familiar with most aspects of technology in the province and strongly believes in the positive impact it can have on our lives and on the future of our children.

Dr. Sara Weinstein, PhD Neuroscience 2007 <IMG STYLE="float: right;" ALT="" SRC="https://cdn.evbuc.com/eventlogos/68655879/sarawheadshotmds2-1.jpg" HEIGHT="144" WIDTH="191"> Data Scientist, Boeing Vancouver Labs 
Sara Weinstein is a data scientist at Boeing Vancouver Labs, where she develops methods for information extraction and information retrieval from unstructured data. Prior to this she conducted data surveillance and mortality research in the research and policy unit at Vancouver’s chief coroner’s office. Weinstein received her PhD in Neuroscience from UBC using functional magnetic resonance imaging to study the neurophysiology of language.  
 
Dr. Surajit Chaudhuri<IMG STYLE="float: right;" ALT="" SRC="https://cdn.evbuc.com/eventlogos/68655879/surajitheadshot.jpg" HEIGHT="152" WIDTH="160"> Distinguished Scientist – Microsoft Research
Surajit Chaudhuri is a Distinguished Scientist at Microsoft Research and leads the Data Management, Exploration and Mining group. As a Deputy Managing Director of MSR Redmond Lab, he also has oversight of Distributed Systems, Networking, Security, Programming languages and Software Engineering groups. His current areas of interest are enterprise data analytics, data discovery, self-manageability and cloud database services. Working with his colleagues in Microsoft Research, he helped incorporate the Index Tuning Wizard (and subsequently Database Engine Tuning Advisor) and data cleaning technology into Microsoft SQL Server. Surajit is an ACM Fellow, a recipient of the ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award, ACM SIGMOD Contributions Award, a VLDB 10-year Best Paper Award, and an IEEE Data Engineering Influential Paper Award. Surajit received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1992.

Mark Chase has been involved in supporting decision-makers in strategic management, performance measurement, performance improvement and resource allocation in Canadian health care for over 35 years. He has been executive director of decision support for VCH since July 2008. Before joining the health region, Chase worked for St. Paul’s Hospital, the BC Council of University Teaching Hospitals, and Medicus Canada.

Adam Binnie’s passion is creating new products for customers that leverage analytics to transform how they do business. An analytics software veteran with more than 20 years’ experience, Binnie has created wholly new analytics software and solutions for organization like SAP, Business Objects and Crystal Decisions. Most recently he was senior vice president of development for the Internet of Things at SAP.
