Synopsis

Since so much has happened concerning Human Centric Lighting (HCL) recently, including this year, people need to be updated with correct information. For example, various ‘experts’ are stating that there is a blue light hazard, red light can help post lunch dip and graveyard shift alertness and LRC’s current Circadian Stimulus Calculator is useful. I provide a set of tools, which can help you determine what is accurate and what is not.

HCL Venn Diagram

The visual system includes both the visual part used for seeing and the non-visual or biologic part. The main focus of the biologic part has been circadian rhythm, which includes alertness, performance, sleep, etc. But recently a non-circadian part has been researched and includes people taking anti-depressants, migraine headaches, autism, dyslexia, etc. In certain applications this may be more important than the circadian part. Including both the circadian and non-circadian parts, HCL really makes lighting much more valuable than the commodity it has been considered for decades. HCL is becoming more important than Edison creating the light bulb.

Very little low hanging fruit, including T12s with magnetic ballasts and even basic grade T8s with generic electronic ballasts, is left. So benefits of HCL are often required to get energy efficient lighting retrofit projects approved. HCL should also be included for most new construction and remodels. HCL often includes advanced lighting controls and IoT.
