Legal name change and gender marker change clinic

TIME CHANGE: The ID Clinic will be open from 9am-12pm and 1-4pm. Note the lunch break from 12-1. Please ensure to arrive before approx. 11:30am or after 1pm. The ID Clinic serves as an opportunity for students and community members to come have direct access to lawyers and paralegals to aid in the process of a name and/or gender marker change. This space is hosted by the Waterloo Region Community Legal Services with support from the Laurier Rainbow Centre. The Waterloo Region Community Legal Services will be offering free legal assistance to whoever needs it. This space is open to both Laurier members and Kitchener-Waterloo community members. How is it set up?The ID Clinic will be drop-in basis that is running from 12:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M on March 28. If possible, the Waterloo Region Community Legal Services team would like you to come ready with forms filled out as best as possible. We are located at Macdonald House, room 104. Building access is directly across from the statue of Wilfrid Laurier sitting on a bench in the Quad. We are asking attendees to register in advanced for our planning purposes only. We welcome drop-ins. Who can attend?If you are in the process of making a legal change to your name and/or gender marker, you are welcome to come and get legal advice and a signature from a lawyer. If you are wanting to gather information, you are also welcome to come ask questions or you can connect with CSEDI (diversity@wlu.ca) and the Rainbow Centre (rainbow@wlu.ca)Who is the Waterloo Region Community Legal Services?The Waterloo Region Community Legal Services is a team that offers:Legal Assistance – They provide legal assistance in specific areas of law to low-income individuals and families ranging from summary advice to full representation.Public Legal Education – Public Legal Education is an essential component of social justice. They regularly offer legal education sessions on a variety of topics including tenants’ rights, Wills, Estates and Power of Attorney, Criminal Injuries Compensation and Employment Law that are tailored to meet your group’s needs. Community Advocacy – WRCLS participates in law reform activities and community development activities. They are interested in improving the lives of people living in poverty and removing barriers that prevent community members from accessing justice.Are there any rules?While there are no specific rules, there are some guidelines and values that we encourage attendees to follow. We ask that everyone be equitable in the space and be mindful of how much space they take up. That is why we are asking folks to have worked through this PDF prior to the best of their ability. We strive to create a space of mutual trust and respect among all attendees. Confidentiality is also important in the space which is described in further detail below.How is confidentiality maintained?We ask that all attendees refrain from asking for any identifying information of others in order to maintain confidentiality and privacy.In addition, we ask that students avoid identifying other attendees when they leave the space.Please email kystewart@wlu.ca if you have specific accessibility requirements, questions, or concerns.
