Description

Join us for In Situ, a three-day multi-arts festival, October 27, 28 and 29, 2016 in the Small Arms Building, an abandoned WWII munitions inspection building at 1352 Lakeshore Road in Mississauga. Space is limited each day so don't wait to order your ticket!

The Small Arms Society invites you to this event in celebration of the upcoming restoration of this large-scale urban industrial heritage building into a future creative hub.

In Situ, an immersive and interactive event will animate the space and spark your imagination with:

  • Music by James Bayford Jazz Ensemble and DJ Barz:
  • Photography, performance, dance, improv, mime, and spoken word by some of the GTA’s best emerging artists;
  • Mural and graffiti art, installation art, design and more from professional artists and students from Humber College, Sheridan Colleges and Cawthra Park Senior Secondary;
  • Special presentation of Creature,an audience promenade style dance/theatre performance by Mississauga’s Frog in Hand. Check out the teaser at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1J-tnFJsqds&feature=youtu.be
  • Projections, full archival photos and movie presented by Heritage Mississauga;
  • On-site interactive activities with Yarn Blitzers and Waterlutions and more!

The Small Arms Society is championing a community driven plan to reinvent the building a creative hub for arts, heritage, and cultural endeavours. Profits from the 3-day event will support community engagement and the future capital fundraising program.

FAQs

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

The event is open to all ages. Since the event will be licensed for alcohol sales, those wishing to purchase alcohol must provide appropriate proof of age of majority.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

There is continuous MiWay bus transit using Route 23 along Lakeshore Road East connecting to the Browns Line GO Train station and TTC on the east (approx 1 km) and to all points along Lakeshore to Port Credit and Clarkson. The Small Arms Building is located at 1352 Lakeshore Road East, on the south side, at Dixie Road.

There is plenty of free parking available for the event at the former Sheridan Ford site directly across the street and there is a traffic signal at the intersection so you can cross safely. Of course cycling or walking are both great alternatives!

What can/can't I bring to the event?

Please do not bring alcohol or outside food to the event. There will be a BBQ, refreshments and a cash bar available on site courtesy of the Credit Valley Lion's Club.

Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for an event that is being held in a former 1940 inspection warehouse building; it is in its original raw state and has not been renovated. At the present time there is no heating in the building. (Which makes it an extra cool experience!)

No formal seating, cruiser style tables, mix and mingle...and dancing with DJ

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Visit our website at http://smallarmssociety.wixsite.com/smallarmsbuilding or email us at info@smallarmsbuilding.ca

Is my ticket transferrable?

Yes, it is but proof of your purchase and status as a student may be required for admission if you plan to use a student-rate ticket.

Are any profits made going to a good cause?

In Situ Multi Arts Festival is presented by the Small Arms Society, an incorporated non-profit organization. Our goal is to celebrate creativity and to begin public engagement around reimagining a future for this significant historic building.

In addition to the evening events we are delivering educational programs on heritage, arts and the environment during the day for students free of charge.

This Festival is run by volunteers with financial support from grants and from our wonderful sponsors. We have done our utmost to keep the costs down and your ticket price low. Please buy a ticket and bring your friends too! Any profit will be used to support community engagement and towards capital funding needed to transform the building into a Creative Hub.

Is Space Limited?

While the Small Arms Building is a large space, the nature of the performances mean that only a limited number of tickets can be made available for each evening. We urge you to buy now and avoid disappointment!

What Should I expect to See? - an excerpt from "Creature"

The sound of breaking glass... A group of friends disturb the dusty silence of an abandoned factory. They play lively music, they dance. A friend strays into the darkness... he does not return. What memories come awake in the night? What happens next?

Creature draws upon the constant, immersive and consuming presence of technology. It gives physical form to whispered fears and grieves for identities lost. Our project represents an urgent desire to explore highly physical forms of storytelling. Dancers will journey through the space and the audience will move with them (promenade style). Onlookers will encounter the physical and metaphorical spaces where creatures reside.

Creature will be a site-specific production at the Small Arms Building in Mississauga. We selected this building for its historical importance as the site of Canada’s first aerodrome and a 1940s munitions factory. This storied building was abandoned, rescued from a demolition ball, and recently designated a historic site under the leadership of local arts advocates. It is an empty, beautifully dilapidated two-storey warehouse. The building possesses incredible character with peeling paint, exposed brick, large pipes, thick glass windows and a classic architectural style. Yet this site is more than a backdrop, it will function as another collaborative partner. For local artists SAB embodies our connection to the past and our hopes for the future of the arts in Mississauga. With dance sequences unfolding in various locations throughout the site, Creature will be the first full length immersive dance performance in Mississauga and the first in the history of the SAB – enlivening one of Mississauga’s most unique public spaces and serving to increase awareness of both the building’s future as an arts facility and the genre of contemporary dance, which is severely under-represented in our community.
