Japanese Calligraphy, or Shodō, is an artistic practice that serves as a connection to Japanese culture. It involves expressing a wide range of characters, including Kanji (derived from Chinese characters) and Kana (the Japanese writing system).
In this intermediate class, you will refine your penmanship and Shodo technique. The focus will be on practicing the fluid semi-cursive style (Gyōsho) with Kanji and short phases like " thank you " ( ありがとう)in Kana.

Additional information
- For ages 14+
- All Material provided at no additional fee (ink, rice paper, brushes, mat, paper weight)
- The instructor will teach in both Japanese and English depending on the participants.
- Since ink stains are permanent, we recommend wearing dark clothing that you won't mind potentially getting ink on.
About the Instructor
Fusako Fujiki is a local Master Calligrapher whose connection to this art form began in childhood. Born and raised in Japan, she received formal artistic training and was granted her professional name by her own Master Japanese Calligrapher. With over 25 years of teaching experience in Metro Vancouver, she offers students the expertise of a deep cultural heritage combined with a highly developed teaching methodology.
