Interrupt, Reframe: Learning from what wasn't built

Founded in 2013, Design Talks Institute (d.talks) is a grassroots, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing thinking and dialogue around architecture, art and design within the urban environment. Through exhibitions, workshops, seminars, and conferences, the organization facilitates wide-ranging discussions that cover a range of contemporary issues on spatial form, distilling how these relate at the local level. Curiosity and a desire to find common ground through compelling inquiry propel and sustain the organization. At d.talks, a question is always as important as an answer.

Interrupt, Reframe Talks

These three talks are a means of opening up the space for new narratives to take hold. What relationships can designers and communities deepen? What don’t we know about the place in which we live?

What can’t quite be understood from the plaques at designated historic places is: what wasn’t built. From “non-visible architectures” to “the mountain that moves” the panel will explore how below-the-radar narratives have shaped our sense of belonging and relationship to the land and the community—the place that we call home.

While a design process works hard to uncover meaning and to connect neighbours and city-dwellers, there are gaps in the representation of voices that define how our city is planned, shaped, and experienced. What relationships can designers and communities deepen? What don’t we know about the place in which we live?
The Interrupt, Reframe talk series is produced in partnership with the Calgary Public Library and with the support of Canada Council for the Arts. The talks are part of an issue of FOLD titled<a href="https://thisisthefold.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Interrupt, Reframe</a> published by d.talks with the support of Canada Council for the Arts, in addition to the ongoing support of Calgary Arts Development and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
