Joe Wiebe, the “Thirsty Writer,” is the author ofCraft Beer Revolution: The Insider’s Guide to B.C. Breweries,the definitive guidebook to British Columbia’s burgeoning craft beer industry, currently in its second edition.Joe has been a freelance writer for 20 years, writing hundreds of articles a wide range of subjects including arts and culture, sports, business and travel, but since 2008 he has mainly written about craft beer with regular columns forTheGrowler, Northwest Brewing News, Vancouver View,UrbanDiner.ca,and theBC Craft Beer News, as well as beer-soaked stories inBritish Columbiamagazine,BCBusiness, WestWorld,Beer West, Taps, Publican, NUVO, Taste, AliveandBoulevard.Joe is a co-founder and co-producer of Victoria Beer Week, which takes place annually in early March, and a co-founder of the BC Ale Trail project, for which he is the Director of Content. He produced the Victoria Beer Map and is the beer columnist for CBC Radio’sAll Points WestandBC Almanacprograms.He has emceed the Canadian Brewing Awards and the Business of Craft Beer conference, and regularly hosts panel discussions on craft beer. Joe presents beer seminars in venues throughout British Columbia leads hosts a monthly beer tasting session in Victoria. He acts as a beer judge for the Okanagan Fest of Ale and the BC Beer Awards and hosts visiting media on tours of the craft beer scene in British Columbia.

What is an IPA anyway?
The name, India Pale Ale, dates back to the 1700s when British brewers began sending hoppy pale ales to India. The style became immensely popular in England by the mid-1800s until Pilsner lagers from continental Europe began showing up.
Today, IPA is once again incredibly popular, at least in craft beer circles. To some beer lovers, IPA is scorned for being too bitter, but “hop-heads” can’t get enough of it. Meanwhile, craft brewers continue to experiment with newer hop varieties, brewing methods, and unorthodox yeasts, creating new IPA variants all the time.
Your host, Joe Wiebe, the Thirsty Writer, will tell you the story of IPA from its earliest origins in 18th century Britain through to its resurrection by contemporary craft brewers in North America and its evolution into a wide range of popular craft beer styles: Black IPA or Cascadian Dark Ale; Red IPA or India Red Ale; Belgian/White IPA; Wild IPA; Double/Imperial IPA; Session IPA or ISA; Rye IPA or India Rye Ale; Brown IPA or India Brown Ale; and, finally, the New England or Hazy IPA.
Over the course of the evening, Joe will lead the group through a tasting of several different IPAs, including a special cask-conditioned IPA prepared by Bad Tattoo.
