Overview

Experience the works of Frank Darling, one of Canada's most prolific architects whose landmark buildings transformed Toronto's streets.

Rediscover this Toronto-born architect who developed a civic architecture during the early 20th-century, a time of optimism and nation-building.

A master of Toronto's Edwardian architecture, Frank Darling's landmarks include the Hockey Hall of Fame, the University of Toronto's Convocation Hall, and Toronto General Hospital. More than a hundred years later, his name has faded from public memory, while his buildings continue to animate city life from the Royal Ontario Museum to Summerhill LCBO to One King West Hotel & Residences.

On this walk, we'll explore this legacy while uncovering Darling's life and influences, the subject of recent research published in the book, Toronto Edwardian - Frank Darling, Architect of Canada’s Imperial Age.

About the Tour Leader

David Winterton is a Principal at ERA Architects and an architectural historian whose work examines Canada’s Edwardian built environment and its ties to the late British world. Winterton has spent years researching Frank Darling’s life and practice, culminating in Toronto Edwardian, the first comprehensive study of this influential Canadian architect. His work draws on extensive archival research, much of it supported by Trinity College’s own collections, and brings new insight to the architectural and cultural forces that shaped early modern Toronto.
