Is child play simply play?  Can early numeracy skills be introduced through play, even tech play? And are educational apps actually educational? Join RCIScience for an exploration of the kindergarten math curriculum, uncover the wild west of apps, and take a look at how mathematical concepts outlined in the LittleCounters® program can be weaved in to everyday activities, including playing with mobile apps.
<A HREF="https://www.wlu.ca/academics/faculties/faculty-of-science/faculty-profiles/joanne-lee/index.html" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Joanne Lee</A> is an Associate Professor of Developmental Psychology at Wilfrid Laurier University. Her research focuses on early childhood learning in language and mathematics. Learning in both home and child care settings and through technology and traditional play are examined. She and her students are evaluating the quality of existing application (app) offering and its alignment to the foundational math skills crucial to achieving mathematical competence in formal schooling. She is the co-author of “Let’s Talk About Math”, which is based on the LittleCounters® program that offers an approach to how purposeful play can build early math skills. Her research has been showcased by several news and media outlets including Today’s Parent, Grand Magazine and CBC Radio.
