Building on insights and observations from research and practice, the talk will present an agenda for a more colourful, exuberant and playful Edmonton. Jessie Andjelic - Building Cities for Lovers and FriendsHow we live together in cities matters. As sociologist, historian, and writer Lewis Mumford noted, the city is a reflection of the way humans live together, seek connections and opportunity, and cooperate. As we begin to make sense of some of the destructive outcomes of city making in the last century, on our own species, on other species, and on the land, how can we build / make / rebuild / tear down / renovate / edit the city, to create buildings and spaces that offer surprise, delight, joy? Design, as a discipline and process, gives us the opportunity to imagine an optimistic and courageous future, one in which buildings are positive and meaningful contributors to urban life. A﻿RTIST FEATUREThe work of the talented <a href="https://www.rahmaanhameedstudios.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rahmaan Hameed</a> will also be on display before and after the lecture. Rahmaan is a professional artist and creative designer who specializes in creating larger than life paintings, murals, and sculptures. A planning generalist, Neal has a particular academic and professional interest in the intersection of planning and design, a focus of his PhD work at UCLA. He is a member of the Edmonton Design Committee and keen to learn and engage the local design community. Marie Annette Mellado, Urban and Regional Planning Student, University of AlbertaMarie is a fourth-year urban and regional planning student at the University of Alberta with a passion for social work, content creation, and urban design. Her education, work experience, and volunteer work has helped her increase her knowledge in city planning perspectives and regulations, public engagement, and sustainability in the urban context.Jessie Andjelic, Architect, Urbanist, Adjunct Professor at U of C, Founding Partner at SPECTACLEJessie Andjelic is an architect, urbanist, adjunct professor at the University of Calgary, and founding partner of SPECTACLE Bureau for Architecture and Urbanism with Philip Vandermey. Jessie has exhibited work in Calgary, Edmonton, Medicine Hat, Vancouver, Toronto, New York, Sao Paulo, Buffalo, Bulgaria, Estonia, Los Angeles, London, and Cambridge and has contributed to work published in Canadian Architect and Canadian Interiors. Jessie regularly mentors students and interns, and in 2019 was awarded the Young Architect prize from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. With her practice, Jessie seeks opportunities to create works of architecture that critically explore our cities and that create reciprocity between built and natural environments. She is currently a director on the Canadian Architectural Certification Board.Shafraaz Kaba - Lecture ModeratorShafraaz Kaba is the founder of ASK* for a Better World – a collaborative studio that aims to build net zero energy, carbon neutral and regenerative buildings, which he founded in 2019. This atelier is now part of a consortium with EcoAmmo Sustainable Consulting, where he is an Integrated Project Delivery Facilitator.Over the last 20 years, he has made significant contributions to the design and cultural landscape of western Canada. Shafraaz is a founder of Media, Architecture, Design Edmonton (M.A.D.E.) – an organization that stimulates design discussion within the community and specifically creates a public forum for design debate. Through M.A.D.E., he helped organize lectures, symposia and exhibitions, including a exhibition, symposium and book themed Capital Modern, which highlighted Edmonton’s modern architectural legacy.
