Let's talk about...movement

Founded in 2013, Design Talks Institute (d.talks) is a grassroots, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing thinking and dialogue around architecture, art and design within the urban environment. Through exhibitions, workshops, seminars, and conferences, the organization facilitates wide-ranging discussions that cover a range of contemporary issues on spatial form, distilling how these relate at the local level. Curiosity and a desire to find common ground through compelling inquiry propel and sustain the organization. At d.talks, a question is always as important as an answer.

Design Talks Institute (d.talks)

Sometimes when we talk about movement we get caught up in speed, crossings, and timetables. These are important, but if we zoom out, what is design's responsibility to help people move in their city? How can we ensure that everyone is included? What is our relationship to each other as a result of the contructions (and assumptions) that we've made about moving and connecting in the city?
This is a "double-feature" panel discussion with a diverse array of voices on architecture, urban design and inclusion. The opportunity to hear such voices in the same room is a rare d.talks moment that we're proud of. We hope you can join us.
Speakers include:

<LI>Giovanna Borasi, Chief Curator of the <A HREF="https://www.cca.qc.ca/en/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Canadian Centre for Architecture</A>, whose research focus includes alternative ways of practicing and evaluating architecture, and how environmental, political and social issues influence today's urbanism and built environment.</LI>
<LI>Amanda Kolson Hurley, architecture and urban issues author and Senior Editor at <A HREF="https://www.citylab.com" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">CityLab</A>, the city-focused publication of The Atlantic. Her forthcoming book, titled Radical Suburbs, will be released in 2019.</LI>
<LI>Don Mulligan was Director of Transportation Planning at The City of Calgary for nine years and is passionate about sustainable urban transportation.</LI>
<LI>Nabeel Ramji hails from Bricolage Calgary, an organization advocating for accessible design and inclusion for all citizens in Calgary, and<A HREF="https://www.riddell.ca/access/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> regularly consults</A> as an Accessibility Infrastructure Specialist on barrier free design.</LI>
<LI>Brigitte Shim along with her partner, A. Howard Stucliffe, are both principals in the design firm Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, a firm receiving fourtttn Governor General's Medals and Awards for Architecturure. She is a Professor at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto.</LI>
<LI>Cowboy Smithx is an award-winning <A HREF="http://elderinthemaking.com" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">filmmaker</A> of Blackfoot Ancestry who produces the REDx talks and the Noirfoot Narrative Labs and is the Artistic Director of Iiniisti Treaty Arts Society.</LI>
<LI>Marianna Vaidman Stone is the Deputy Director of <A HREF="https://gehlinstitute.org" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Gehl Institute</A>, focused on improving life between buildings. She's worked on policy that re-enacted a zoning framework for public projects in New York as well as a legislative agenda for buildings to be more climate resilient. </LI>

Please note that this event will be 1/2 hour longer than our normal events but we will have snacks to keep you fortified.

Is the venue accessible?
People using wheelchairs or with mobility challenges are encouraged to enter the new Central Library through the east side, off 8 Avenue SE. There is a Calgary Parking Authority parking lot behind the Library with accessible and family stalls. There is a public exterior elevator, accessible 24/7, located across from this lot that will bring you to the entrance of the Library. If you are using this Library outside of our hours of operation, please use the intercom. What are my transportation options for getting to and from the event?
The New Central Library is a few steps from the LRT City Hall Station in both directions.
 
How can I participate in the topic?
We're trying to define movment. What does it mean to you? Take a photograph or write a few words that describes moving in your neighbourhood. What makes this city user-friendly?
