Let's Talk Aquatics: Marine Virtual Series

Over the next two months, the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (CMM) will be hosting the “Let’s Talk Aquatics: Marine Virtual Series,” which will feature several online sessions on marine related topics. This series will focus on learning, discussing, and sharing information about specific initiatives or projects. Each session will feature a new topic. Presentations will be given by guest speakers and staff at the CMM. The following is an overview of the sessions scheduled for this month;•	January 20th, 2021 - 10 am to 12 pm - Enhanced Maritime Situational Awareness (EMSA):o	This session will provide training on how to use an online Geographic Information System (GIS) platform. This specific platform can be used to look at what activities are taking place in local waters, such as real-time marine traffic information. •	January 27th, 2021 - 10 am to 12 pm - Marine Liability Act Review:o	When there is a ship-sourced oil spill, liability and compensation for any damages or losses can be provided under the Marine Liability Act. This session will give an overview of the Marine Liability Act and explain the compensation process for First Nations. •	February 3rd, 2021 - 10 am to 12 pm - Places of Refuge for Vessels:o	When a vessel needs to be docked or stationed in a non-emergency situation a request can be submitted to access a Place of Refuge. This session will give an overview Places of Refuge initiative in the Atlantic region.•	February 10th, 2021 - 10 am to 12 pm - Marine Oil Spill Response &amp; Scenarios:o 	When there is a marine oil spill, there are several steps that need to be followed for the respond to the incident. This session will explain the steps followed by the Canadian Coast Guard for responding to marine oil spills. Please keep an eye out for announcements about these upcoming sessions on the Mi’kmaw Conservation Group social media platforms.
