Public Library Services Branch is hosting an in-person Board Basics Workshop at the Brooks Public Library in Fort Saskatchewan, AB on Saturday, May 30, 2026 from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
This free workshop is open to all library board members and library managers. It is designed to help participants support effective public library service in their communities.
In this workshop, participants will learn about:
- the Libraries Act and Libraries Regulation;
- the structure of public library service in Alberta, including the Alberta Public Library Network;
- library board roles and responsibilities;
- governance tools, including Plan of Service, policies and budget;
- library board member roles and responsibilities;
- library board funding and finances; and
- working with other library stakeholders and board-staff relationships.
The deadline for registration is Wednesday, May 27, 2026. We encourage you to register early as capacity is limited and later registrants may be placed on a waitlist.
Participants will receive a Board Basics handbook and copies of the Libraries Act and Libraries Regulation. Meals, travel, and any required accommodation will be the participant’s responsibility.
