Lougheed College Lectures: Fall 2017

The Peter Lougheed Leadership College at the University of Alberta is an undergraduate leadership development experience that will forge leaders through formal and co-curricular learning, engagement and mentorship. The PLLC promotes lively interaction among students, the college’s founding principal, U of A faculty leaders, distinguished visiting scholars, and global leaders—all united by a desire to influence and inspire positive change in themselves and others.

<H2>AGT Foods: Global Growth with a Purpose with Murad Al-Katib</H2>
Canada’s position as an internationally successful trading nation is driven by a vibrant and growing sector of entrepreneurs and business leaders capitalizing on the growing demand for natural resources, food and technology. As the 2017, World EOY Entrepreneur of the Year, Murad Al-Katib will relate his story of his journey from a basement startup to globally integrated value added agricultural processor in lentils, peas and staple foods, with revenues exceeding $2 billion and with operations and exports in 120 countries in under 15 years. He will also share his insights on leadership and entrepreneurship as the world’s top entrepreneur in 2017.

<H2>The Winning Way to Think with Laurie Eisler</H2>
Laurie Eisler, head coach of Panda's Volleyball and the all-time winningest coach in University of Alberta history, will speak on "How We Think," reflecting on the mindset required for leadership in competitive, stressful situations. With her ability to stay cool when tensions are high while leading a team of university athletes, her insight will be valuable.

<H2>Decision Making for the Greater Good with Michelle Wilsdon</H2>
Councillor Michelle Wilsdon understands the complexities of decision-making on behalf of a diverse group, having served the Enoch Cree Nation in a planning and development role. She's an award-winning public servant with a mind for relationship building and resource management. She has seen the juxtaposition between progress and preservation firsthand on projects such as the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. Leaders have many difficult decisions to make, and Councillor Wilsdon will share how she navigates her options on behalf of her community.
<H3>This event is co-presented by the City of Edmonton. In addition to refreshments, bannock and snacks will be served.</H3>

<H2>Normal Life: Thoughts on Diversity with Catherine MacLean</H2>

The social consequence of difference merits deep philosophical, religious, and spiritual understanding. Is diversity a social construct? A moral imperative? Why is something considered “the norm”? From I am Canadian beer ads to literature to civic demonstrations, we furnish diversity with meaning and values.

In this lecture we will address religious narratives through vivid ancient stories such as Hagar and Moses. We will consider thoughts from Northrop Frye, Margaret Atwood, Thomas King and Barry Lopez. We will take into account the problem of uniformity and critically examine some cultural metanarratives that sustain both norms and diversity.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
The Tory Lecture Theatres are located on the North side of campus along Saskatchewan Drive at approximately 112 St. Paid parking is available along Saskatchewan Drive and in <A HREF="http://www.asinfo.ualberta.ca/ParkingServices/Visitor-Parking.aspx" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">University lots</A> E and U. E is the closest lot to the Theatre, but if it is full, please use lot U. If you are taking transit to the University Station, we suggest you follow along Hub Mall (or walk inside and use connecting pedways) for the easiest route.
This event is accessible, and we invite anyone with accessibility requirements to contact us in advance.
