Process-Based Restoration of Riverscapes Winter Series

Waters Edge Biological

The Winter Series aims to prepare professionals and community technicians to review and prioritize riverscape restoration projects.

Halalt First Nation and Cowichan Tribes are partnering on restoration in both the Koksilah and Chemainus Rivers and their tributaries with support from BC Salmon Habitat and Innovation Fund. This four part webinar style program on riverscape restoration planning is designed for technicians, resource managers and guardians. This series is being organized and facilitated by Waters Edge Biological (WEB) to provide an overview of riverscape restoration frameworks and some of the key information requirements to determine goals and objectives for low-tech process-based restoration projects.Instructor: Jeff Anderson, Geomorphic ConsultingJeff has been working in northwestern British Columbia since 1996. His experience includes planning and managing both research and resource sector projects. He has worked with provincial, federal, state, and foreign regulatory agencies on a range of hydropower, mining, and oil and gas projects. He brings with him extensive field experience and excellent working knowledge of ecogeomorphology (hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, ecology) and riverscape science.Jeff is currently undertaking a doctorate degree in stream restoration. Studying under Dr. Joe Wheaton, Jeff is developing watershed-scale tools to help operationalize process-based restoration in British Columbia, and Canada. His technical skill set includes a comprehensive understanding modelling hydrology, hydraulics, sediment transport, and environmental flow needs.Jan 7th Session #1: Introduction to Riverscape Restoration

Riverscape Health Approach

Restoration Overview - Watershed Context

Restoration Framework (USDA/NRCS)

Watershed Character (Physiographic)

Land Use History (wSP)

Indigenous Values (FSC)

Resource Folder (Google Drive)

Jan 21 Session #2: Geomorphology

Geomorphologically Informed - Hierarchically Nested Frameworks

Riverscape Character

Riverscape Condition

Adjustment Capacity

Recovery Potential

Feb 4 Session #3: Restoration Focus

Riverscape Goals and Objectives

Smart Indicators

Indicators of Change Meaningful to Fish at the Reach Scale

Feb 18 Session #4: Aligning Principles to Structure

Riverscape Health Principles

Structure Forces Complexity - Complexity Builds Resilience

The Role of Structure in Rivers

Treatment Successes

This program is funded through the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund, and is being offered on behalf of Halalt First Nation and Cowichan Tribes.
