Lunch & Learn

The Varley Art Gallery of Markham is a vital cultural hub for artists and diverse communities. A municipal gallery, we create critical conversations about Canadian art and society. We inspire local and national audiences to engage with art through outstanding exhibitions and rich public and educational programs relevant to the communities we serve. We support artists from York region and seek to broaden access to the arts for diverse artists and cultural groups. We also share and celebrate the life and work of F.H. Varley, a founding member of the Group of Seven. The Varley Art Gallery is situated on the traditional territories of Indigenous Peoples including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe. We are committed to reconciliation, partnership and enhanced understanding.

Varley Art Gallery of Markham

Every third Wednesday of the month, the gallery presents Lunch and Learn. These informal artist talks provide our community members with the opportunity to learn about current and future exhibitions, as well as hear about ongoing curatorial research happening at the gallery. This program also supports emerging and established artists by providing them with a forum in which to present their work.  Wednesday, October 16, 2019 Join artist Scott Sawtell as they will be discussing his progression as an artist, with special emphasis on how he overcomes artist blocks, how important transitional work is to his practice, and how his life teaching has influenced how he thinks about the creative process.
Scott Sawtell has an M.F.A from the University of Waterloo and is a graduate of OCAD University. As well as maintaining a vital artistic career showing work across Canada and the United States, Scott has previously curated exhibitions for The Town of Newmarket, the City of Kitchener, Oakville Galleries and Humber College.
Scott Sawtell previously taught at OCAD University and currently teaches at Brock University and Georgian College in Barrie. He views his main focus in teaching art to aid students in discovering their own unique creative voices and realizing their own independent potential.
Scott works and lives in Newmarket, Ontario.
