Alberta Crop Commissions

A hands-on grain grading day for farmers 
This one day course will provide you with a better understanding of how your canola, wheat, barley and pulse crops are graded and what you need to know to get the best grade.
 
Seating is limited and pre-registration is required for this day of hands-on, interactive learning.
Participants will be divided into small groups and will rotate through these four sessions:
Canola Grading  - Judy Elias from the Canadian Grain Commission will take you through the canola grading process including correct screening for dockage and assessing green seed. Keith Gabert from the Canola Council of Canada will discuss the agronomic practices that growers can do to help get the best grade and ensure their canola is ready for export.
Wheat Grading - Bill Adduono from the Canadian Grain Commission and Shona Fraser from Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI) will be jointly teaching the basics of grading and why our customers care through hands on training, including information on “base grades.” Participants will be able to practice grading to gain more knowledge that can be used when marketing their wheat.
Barley Grading -  Fang So from Canada Malting will lead a hands-on malt barley grading session with support from two of their country elevator managers. They’ll examine grading factors such as chitting, protein and discuss malt quality seen from the past year.
Pulse Grading - Larry Michta from SPS in Saskatoon and Nevin Rosaasen from the Alberta Pulse Growers will take participants through the process of grading peas and lentils, the harvesting process and ways to reduce earth tag, splits and cracks. Information will help producers of peas and lentils achieve better grades and give them a leg up when it comes to marketing.

9:15- 10:30am - Session 1
10:30 - 10:45am - Break
10:45 - 12:00pm - Session 2
12:00 - 1:00pm - Lunch 
1:00 -2:15pm - Session 3
2:15- 2:30pm - Break
2:30 - 3:45pm - Session 4
