March Opening Reception!

March Opening Reception!

Overview

Celebrate three new exhibitions by Woojae Kim, Samantha Wigglesworth, and Kel Taylor!

Join us from 6 - 8pm on Friday March 20th for an exciting opening reception!

In our Main Gallery, I Hear a Silent Dissonance by Woojae Kim. This exhibition presents handmade percussion instruments created in response to the 2023 British Columbia wildfires. Inspired by the traditional Korean music of (풀이) “untangling”, the work explores instrument making and sound production as a ritual of reconciliation. Through sculptural installation, sound recording and text, the exhibition invites audiences to examine resonance, complicity, and relationships between humans and the more-than-human world.

In our Project Gallery, Right to Exist by Samantha Wigglesworth. This series of portraits explores contemporary issues around gender expression, specifically around the increasingly violent and hostile tide of conservative rhetoric we are experiencing in North America currently. With its social and political implications for gender nonconforming bodies, Sam aims to give these people a platform through painting portraits of them. Sam seeks to visually tell their stories and advocate for their need for a safe and inclusive existence.

Finally, in our Members' Gallery is Dear Diary by Kel Taylor. How many diaries have screamed agony or sighed relief as they were shredded and burned? Artist Kel Taylor poses this question to viewers, as she herself has lost count of the self-inflicted carnage, deemed imperative after witnessing her familial devastation in the wake of reading private journals. Determined never to leave stories unattended, abandoned, without being present to deny, defend, or choose; she is taking control and deciding which Dear Diary pages she will let you turn to. This interdisciplinary exhibition combines painting, journaling, and performance in a unique and engaging way.

Come connect with your community, enjoy light refreshments, and be the first to see these exciting exhibitions! RSVP to let us know you're coming!
