MAY SPEECH & HEARING MONTH LECTURE

May is a special month for many reasons, but for those who work as speech-language pathologists or audiologists it has even more meaning because we celebrate our professions and take the opportunity to showcase how much impact they have on the people we serve.  Annually in May the department hosts free public lectures to engage the community and spread awareness about areas of research, education  and clinical settings.

May Speech and Hearing Month Lectures

<p>May is a special month for many reasons, but for those who work as speech-language pathologists or audiologists it has even more meaning because we celebrate our professions and take the opportunity to showcase how much impact they have on the community. </p><p>On May 19th, 2022 our department will feature two 2 guest speakers:</p><p><strong>Kuruvilla Mathew</strong>, Audiologist / Lecturer (Medicine Stat Only) (Reg. CASLPO), Coordinator of Clinical Education : Hearing Disorders and  <strong>Yvonne Wyndham</strong>, Speech-Language Pathologist, Learning Centre 1, Toronto District School Board (Reg. CASLPO).</p>

<h2>Title: Hearing and Cognition</h2><h3>Kuruvilla Mathew, MASLP.</h3><p>Reg. Audiologist / Lecturer (Medicine Stat Only) (Reg. CASLPO), Coordinator of Clinical Education : Hearing Disorders</p><p>Kuruvilla Mathew graduated his Bachelor’s in Audiology &amp; Speech Language Pathology from Mangalore University, India and holds a Master’s degree in Audiology &amp; Speech Language Pathology from Bharati Vidyapeeth University, India.  He is a registered member of the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario [CASLPO], Rehabilitation Council of India &amp; a Life member of the Indian Speech and Hearing Association.</p><p></p><p>As an Intern, Mr. Mathew gained professional skills working in various hearing aid centers, special schools &amp; hospital settings. He headed the Audiology &amp; Speech Language Pathology department of a busy ENT clinic in Cochin before he migrated to Canada.  Mathew worked as a Clinical Audiologist in different clinical settings in Ontario since 2015 and has experience working as a Quality Assurance Reviewer &amp; Mentor. He worked with Toronto public health in their Infant hearing screening program at Mount Sinai Hospital &amp; Scarborough Health Network - Centenary hospital. Currently he works as an Audiologist at Baycrest Hospital &amp; Coordinator of Clinical Education: Hearing Disorders at Department of Speech-Language Pathology at University of Toronto. He is the co-founder of KIDZ AUTISM AND SPEECH CLINIC INC. </p><p></p>

<h2>Title: Promoting the Work of Speech-Language Pathologists in the area of Mental Health and Well-Being: Discussion of work in mental health and well-being from a speech and language perspective</h2><h3>Yvonne Wyndham</h3><p>Speech-Language Pathologist, Learning Centre 1, Toronto District School Board (Reg. CASLPO)</p><p>Bio: Yvonne originally trained and worked as an SLP in England. She has a wide range of experience, working as a Speech-Language Pathologist for over 30 years in Ontario, with adults and children in community, clinical and educational settings. She is currently in her 21st year as a Speech-Language Pathologist with Toronto District School Board. Yvonne is a member of various committees in her department such as Technology and Public Relations, where she has developed, co-developed and presented various workshops to her colleagues and educators across the entire school board. She was also a previous chair of her department’s Professional Practices committee and is the current chair of the inaugural TDSB SLP Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression committee. Yvonne is the SLP rep on the TDSB Mental Health and Well-Being Committee (comprised of Psychologists, Social workers, and Occupational Therapists as well as Child and Youth workers/counsellors and Board-Certified Behaviour Analysts). She is very keen to promote the work of speech-language pathologists in the area of Mental Health And Well-Being.</p><p>In 2015 Yvonne was elected for her first term as council Member of CASLPO (College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario). She is currently serving her third and final term with CASLPO.</p><p>Yvonne was a Canadian TV voice-over artist for six years and was also a founding board member of a charitable organization that supports and inspires urban youth to lead lives free of violence.</p><p>Summary:  Many people, including speech-language pathologists, are unsure regarding the connection between speech and language and mental health.  This has become quite evident during my work over the last 4 years, and currently I am the sole consistent speech language pathologist, on the Toronto District School Board Professional Support Services Mental Health and Well-Being (MHWB) committee. The committee is a multidisciplinary group, comprised of Professional Support Services (PSS) staff. Most people understand why specific PSS staff such as social workers, psychologists, child, and youth service workers, and most recently, board certified behaviour analysts (BCBAs) are involved in promoting the mental health and well-being of students, caregivers, and educators/school staff - whereas, how or why speech-language pathologists (and occupational therapists) provide help in this area is not as clear cut. This lack of knowledge is not limited to members of the committee; many speech-language pathologists are also unclear regarding their role within the area of mental health and well-being. This talk would aim to provide information regarding why and how speech-language pathologists work in the area of mental health and well-being.  </p><p></p>
