Media Relations 101 Workshop

The Toronto Science Policy Network aims to provide a platform for students (graduate and undergraduate) as well as Post Doctoral researchers at the University of Toronto to learn more about and engage in science policy.

Do you have an important story to share about your research and want to engage a wider audience... but don’t know how or where to start? Then come out to the <A HREF="http://toscipolicynet.ca/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Toronto Science Policy Network</A>’s workshop on media relations!
This workshop will feature media training from two Faculty of Medicine communications professionals: Gabrielle Giroday and Liam Mitchell. Our two workshop hosts will walk you through how to make your research more accessible to a general audience and get your message across effectively, including what makes an item newsworthy and how to develop key messages. Please bring along a piece of your research (e.g. a poster, conference or paper abstract) for the workshop activity, which includes a fun pitch slam.

<H2>Workshop Hosts - Bios:</H2>
Gabrielle Giroday Media and Communications Specialist, University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine Gabe is originally from Toronto and began her journalism career here. She then worked for years as a reporter in Winnipeg, and as a government spokeswoman in Manitoba for issues like the economy and mining. She then took on the role of editor for a newspaper that went to thousands of lawyers across Ontario, called Law Times, with Thomson Reuters. She has contributed writing or reportage to the Winnipeg Free Press, CBC, the Globe and Mail and the National Post, among others. She joined the faculty of medicine this year as the media relations and communications specialist. In her role, she works with journalists who want to interview faculty members, and edits UofTMed Magazine, an award-winning publication that goes to alumni. Her favourite part of her job is working with smart, kind people to illuminate substantive work and educate the public.  
Liam Mitchell  Associate Director, Communications, University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine Liam Mitchell is the Associate Director of Communications at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine. He holds graduate degrees in journalism and higher education administration. Prior to joining the University of Toronto, he was a journalist with CBC News.

<H3>What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?</H3>
The closest subway stop is Queen's Park Station, which is a three minute walk from the Medical Sciences Building.
<H3>What accessibility accomodations are available?</H3>
Our event will feature live captioning, and live streaming. It will be available on the TSPN YouTube channel following the event.
The main entrance to the Medical Science Building are the large doors reachable via outdoor stairs - this entrance is clearly visible from the King's Circle. Both the main and back entrance feature a wheelchair accessible ramp, handrails on the stairwell and ramp, and an accessible entrance (i.e. power double doors with large push plates). There are washrooms available on every floor of the building.
