Description

The North Shore Committee to End Violence Against Women in Relationships (NS VAWIR) is pleased to bring the Men as Allies event to the North Shore community on the unceded traditional territory of the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

On Saturday, October 20th, from 9:30am - 2:30pm at Carson Graham Secondary School in North Vancouver, we welcome all members of the community to join the discussion on how men can be allies in ending violence against women.

The keynote address will be delivered by JR LaRose, former BC Lions, 2011 Grey Cup champion and spokesperson for the Be More Than a Bystander campaign - a partnership between the Ending Violence Association of BC and BC Lions. A proud member of One Arrow First Nation, he is an ambassador for Aboriginal peoples and an accomplished speaker speaking and facilitating over 400 presentations throughout Canada and the United States since 2008.

The keynote will be followed by a panel forum with community representatives to address important relevant topics:

-Resources in the community
-Youth issues
-Healthy relationships
-Indigenous voices
-Personal growth
-Support
-How to impact social change

Following the panel discussion and a catered lunch by Mr. Bannock, who operates Vancouver's first Indigenous food truck, will be live performances including local hip hop artist, Discreet Da Chosen 1, from the Squamish Nation. Discreet is a talented artist who has dedicated much of his time educating youth on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. The forum will also provide a venue for local community service providers to connect with members of the public through information tables and displays.

For community service providers:

If you would like to have an information table at the Men as Allies event, please contact nsvawir@northshorewomen.ca for information on how to register.
