What to expect
Join Heart Comonos for our Circular Economy Initiative workshops on Mending, Weaving, and Appliance Repair! These workshops are part of the Heart Comonos mission to promote environmental wellness through sustainable practices and skill development.
Our goal for these workshops is to extend the usability of household items like clothing/textiles to minimize waste sent to landfills, and to reduce our dependence on fast-fashion retailers. With help from our expert “fixers,” we will do our best to repair items, and to teach community members the skills required to do it for themselves with take-home mending kits for repairing clothing and textiles!
This is the first part of our "Cooksvile Brings It Back Around!" series. Mending is much more than just repairing a hole in your shirt. It's a meditative practice that connects us to the things around us, repairing fabrics and extending their stories.
In this workshop, Arwen will teach basic hand sewing, machine sewing and embroidery techniques to help you repair woven clothing/hats/bags. She'll also share how to give them a customized look with your own creative touch!
Come create a patch or embroider directly onto your clothes to customize and mend them.
All materials are provided — just bring yourself, a willingness to learn, and an open heart. No experience needed!
Meet the Facilitator, Arwen
Arwen Muir Karaszewski is an artist and illustrator based in Ontario who has always been in love with nature, teaching and learning. Currently, she is studying Illustration at OCAD University where she runs a community meditation/art making group "Project Hope".
Arwen also practices sewing and mending, passionately teaching these skills with communities to extend the life-cycle of textiles, encourage creative expression, and build connection. We are all interconnected in this woven tapestry of life and we must work together with responsibility and listen to the heartbeat of the world, for us and the next generations.
