Minor Empire

The Mercury Lounge has been a Mecca for the arts in Canada's capital city of Ottawa, since its inception in November 1996. Its programming purports a musical vision steeped in the traditions of jazz and yet forward in its approach to encompass all its many derivatives. Through its dynamic programming, the Mercury Lounge has successfully connected the dots, uniting jazz with contemporary electronic break beat culture. Within its walls the very philosophy of jazz, that of change, abounds. It serves not only as a club, and live venue, but also for poetry readings, dance performances and art gallery.

Minor Empire’s sound is defined by the dreamy vocals of Ozgu Ozman which soar above a bed of pulsating grooves and organic instrumentation to create the airy psychedelic vibe. Exclaim praised the group for its “slinky, dub­y, knotty Turkish rhythms”. Le Devoir called their sound “refined” and said “Ozman weaves a most beautiful music from her Turkish roots”. Songlines UK praised “Ozman’s pure and sinuous vocals” and the “percussion that simmers with delicious intensity”. CBC Radio said, Minor Empire has “marked an important way forward for Turkish and world music”. Milo Miles (NPR, Rolling Stone, NY Times) deemed their Uprooted album the best release of 2018.
