The CIM's Environmental and Social Responsibility Society was founded to provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge and skills in technical areas between professionals in the mining, metallurgical, petroleum and coal industries. “Who Decides?” is a virtual participatory learning activity developed by Dr. Jocelyn Fraser and Dr. Cathryn MacCallum

“Who Decides?” is a virtual participatory learning activity developed by social performance and social risk experts, Dr. Jocelyn Fraser and Dr. Cathryn MacCallum, and is centred around a fictitious mining project.The activity introduces participants to some of the complexities many mining projects face through scenario-based decision making, involving a range of perspectives. The views and perspectives of participants are captured using online learning tools to ultimately decide how and if the project should continue.The activity is suitable for anyone with an interest in mineral exploration or mining.Activity Structure:<ul><li>Who Decides? starts with a short video to introduce the context of the fictitious project.</li><li>Participants are then grouped and immersed in four parallel scenarios (governance, Indigenous People, shared value, and environment) to consider a range of issues related to the fictitious mining project.</li><li>Each scenario is centred around a question for discussion and response.</li><li>The scenario-based sessions are led by expert facilitators and use a variety of online engagement tools to facilitate dialogue and discussion.</li><li>Participants prioritise recommendations for their respective scenarios and then come back together to agree on a set of recommendations for the project.</li></ul>Ticket types include active and passive participation - seats for active participants are limited for the purposes of dialogue and group moderation. Active participants will be directly involved in the whiteboarding and dialogue while passive participants will listen and submit questions via chat, as well as participate in the voting and prioritization processes. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, where she earned her PhD. Her work addresses social risk and social responsibility in the global mining sector, with a particular focus on community engagement, business models, and the ways in which mining can create shared value. Jocelyn has a particular interest in the opportunities for mining company-community partnerships that can address the challenges embodied in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is on the leadership team of a social entreprise start-up, Inspire Resources.Cathryn MacCallum - Sazani AssociatesSazani Associates is a not-for-profit organisation, established to support sustainable livelihoods through education, training and technical support. Cathryn one of the founding directors of Sazani Associates, with a PhD in sustainable livelihoods and adaptive capabilities from UCL, has more than 25 years of experience and expertise in social performance and international development. As an ESG technical specialist to the natural resources sector, ranging from agriculture to renewable energy to mining, Cathryn has applied her expertise in social performance to Due Diligence (DD), merger and acquisition audits, loan reviews, Independent Engineer Reviews (IERs) and managed numerous technical studies. Cathryn is also engaged with academia, as well as a number of expert and policy forums contributing to align social performance and the mitigation of social risk with the sustainable development goals.
