Farm transition and succession planning from the equally important

lenses of operations and tax

There are many tax levers to pull in an agriculture transition and succession context, however one never wants to let the tax tail wag the business dog. This talk will explore how effective transition and succession planning can meet both tax, operational and other objectives, and how with proper planning you can often execute all to their full extent. Capital gains exemption and tax deferred inter generational gifting/transfer of farm property and farm corporations will be discussed. Additionally, farm business structures and the different tools within them for different scenarios will be discussed as well. There is no one size fits all approach, which will hopefully allow attendees to walk away with some takeaways to communicate to their agriculture client base and potential planning opportunities.

Literacy has a profound impact over a lifetime and begins at an early age

There are huge economic costs for Canadian society in term of health, social services, employment and the justice system for students who do not graduate high school.

“It is hard to identify any other single issue that can have such a large payoff to individuals, the economy and society than literacy.” – Literacy Matters: A Call for Action, TD Bank Financial Group 2018.

Our vision is bold but clear: every child in Saskatchewan will have the opportunity to reach their full potential through access to quality early education. Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation (SPSF) is an independent charity working in partnership with Saskatoon Public Schools to support students, schools, and teachers through our 3 strategic priorities - literacy, wellness and innovation.

Each year, nearly 30% of students in Saskatoon Public Schools (SPS), through no fault of their own, do not achieve Grade 3 literacy upon completion of Grade 3. These facts are even more concerning in certain neighborhoods where up to 60% of Grade 3 students do not achieve this critical milestone. The research is clear that if a child does not achieve Grade 3 reading level by the end of 3rd Grade, they are four times less likely to graduate high school. That is 5000 students every year in Saskatchewan do no graduate high school on time. Saskatchewan students rank among the lowest in reading comprehension compared to other provinces (PISA 2022).

SPSF launched Early Learning Equal Start in 2019 – a bold and ambitious $20M campaign to fully fund Full-Day, Every Day Kindergarten, Page Turners and Camp Brain Power ensuring our youngest learners are ready to thrive as they begin their school journey. To evaluate the outcome of Full-Day, Every Day Kindergarten SPSF partnered with the University of Toronto to conduct an independent, multi-year study. The evidence is undeniable. Data shows that children who attend Full-Day, Every Day Kindergarten have better educational outcomes than children who attend half-day or alternating full-day programming. The gains extend beyond the classroom, shaping long-term educational achievement, equity and economic resilience.

The work of Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation (SPSF) is unique in Canada and is a model being adopted elsewhere. The investment donors and partners have made in SPSF and the partnership between SPSF and SPS has led to innovation for Saskatchewan’s youngest learners.

Imagine a Saskatchewan where all students are able to realize their full potential!
