Open Source Software in AECO

Carleton Immersive Media Studio, Digital Built National Capital Region

The growing movement of Open Source Software can expand the capabilities of everyone working with built assets.

VSIM (Visualization, Simulation and Modeling)

One of the most advanced digital processes of representation and project delivery for the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations (AECO) industry in Canada today is Building Information Modeling (CIM). BIM is a process intended to connect people and data. However, this is not how the AEC industry uses BIM. The status quo is to work with proprietary solutions and closed file formats, limiting accessibility and interoperability. There is an emerging demand for an alternative to proprietary solutions. In the last couple of years, the open source software (OSS) BIM community has grown exponentially - highlighting the desire for OpenBIM, an alternative to proprietary solutions. BuildingSmart International defines openBIM as a vendor-neutral, collaborative process that facilitates interoperability, openness, and flexibility of choice of technology.Join us on February 16th as experts from industry, open standards, software development, and academia discuss the state of OSS for the AEC industry.Only 50 spots are available in person, but online registration is unlimited! For online attendance, preregister through zoom: https://carleton-ca.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEtdOCqrzgiG9z-uFF86NU6yqg7DkCcw_GI
