Celebrating 50 years of service, Raga Mala Calgary is thrilled to welcome back Padma Shri <a href="https://www.ronumajumdar.com/" title="https://www.ronumajumdar.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Pt. Ronu Majumdar</a> back as he ends his finale tour with Calgary. Joining him will be his son, <a href="https://hrishikeshmajumdar.com/" title="https://hrishikeshmajumdar.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Hrishikesh Majumdar</a>, who is carrying the torch forward. Accompanying them both on the tabla, <a href="https://www.subratabhattacharya.com" title="https://www.subratabhattacharya.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Pt. Subrata Bhattacharya</a>.

Artist BiographiesPadma Shri Pt. Ronu Majumdar:Pandit Ranendranath ‘Ronu’ Majumdar is a bansuri master from Benares. His father was a homeopathic doctor, oil painter, and amateur flautist who took lessons from Pandit Pannalal Ghosh, who provided him with a strong early grounding. He then studied with various gurus before embarking on an acclaimed classical career, including work with Pandit Ravi Shankar. He has had a long and fruitful association with film composer RD Burman.A keen fusioneer, he has performed with a range of figures from the world of music, including Ry Cooder, George Harrison, Jon Hassell, and R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, and believes that talented classical musicians playing for films “will only enhance the level of music in the world”.He established the Sadhana School of Indian classical music in Chicago, and continues to tour energetically. He once assembled 5,378 flautists on one stage, and describes himself as “still a young boy running in the ghats of Benaras”.Pt. Ronu Majumdar was awarded the Padma Shri in 2025, holds Guinness World Records in leading gala concerts involving a record number of musicians in 2015 and 2025, and even holds a Grammy nomination in 1996.Hrishikesh Majumdar:Hrishikesh Majumdar is a remarkably talented and proficient young flute artist, celebrated as a prodigy in the world of Indian classical music. Beginning his musical journey at the tender age of 6, Hrishikesh has been under the tutelage of his father and guru, the legendary Pt. Ronu Majumdar. His mother, Mrs. Anandi Bula Majumdar, provided his initial vocal training, which was later honed under the guidance of Guru Pandit Vikas Kashalkar.Hrishikesh holds a Master's degree in Music from Bharati Vidyapeeth University and proudly represents the Maihar Gharana Binkaari style. His performances encompass the Dhrupad style alaap, Jod Jhaala, and Ghatkari, showcasing his versatility with Thumri, Dadra, and folk music. A decorated artist, Hrishikesh won first prize in the Swar Sadhana Samiti for Instrumental Music at the national level. His memorable jugalbandi with his father at Goa Fest 2019 was a standout performance.Pt. Subrata Bhattacharya:A tabla player of note on the Indian classical music scene, Subrata is amazingly talented and his accomplishments and achievements in the field of percussion music have earned him name and enviable fame. Subrata is one of the leading tabla players in India today.As an accompanist of choice of some of the most renowned classical exponents, he exhibits his command over the tabla and his comprehension of the intricacies of the notes and sounds of classical music. He has to his credit numerous performances at some of the most prestigious venues in India and abroad. Subrata has impressed audiences in the USA, the Middle East, and Europe. Audiences at the Dover Lane Music Conference (periodical), ITC Sangeet Sammelan Calcutta, Gunidas Sangeet Sammelan, Salt Lake Music Festival, Bhawanipur Sangeet Sammelan, Dakhini Sangeet Sammelan, Golpark Rama Krishna Mission Annual Music Conference, Calcutta, A.I.R.Concerts and Radio FM Music Concert, to name a few, have had the opportunity to see this immensely talented musician perform. He has also performed in Sparsh in Lucknow, and at the National Center for Performing Arts, Mumbai, and India International Center, Delhi.
