Pattern Drafting : Create a Sewing Pattern from Your Favourite Garment
Bring your favourite garment and learn how to turn it into a custom sewing pattern from scratch!
Have a favourite garment you wish you could recreate again and again? In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to draft a sewing pattern from an existing article of clothing—without taking it apart.
Designed for confident beginners and experienced sewists alike, this class demystifies the process of “rubbing off” or tracing a garment to create a reusable paper pattern. You’ll learn how to analyze construction details, capture accurate seam allowances, and transfer various shaping elements.
Through guided demonstrations and step-by-step practice, you’ll draft a pattern from your chosen garment (simple styles such as A-line skirts, tops, or elastic-waist pants/pj's work best). By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a completed paper pattern and the knowledge to replicate and customize your design at home.
In This Workshop, You Will Learn:
- How to evaluate a garment for pattern drafting
- Tools and materials needed for accurate tracing
- Techniques for capturing seams, curves and more
- Adding seam allowances and labeling pattern pieces
- Tips for testing and refining your new pattern
Please bring a clean, well-pressed garment you’d like to replicate (woven, non stretchy fabrics are recommended for beginners). All materials included.
