Photo Encaustic Workshop

La FAB sur MillChelsea, QC
Thursday, Mar 26 from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm
Overview

Turn your photo into an encaustic work of art!

New Workshop, Layered Photo Encaustic with Tissue Paper

This unique photo encaustic workshop explores layering imagery using delicate tissue paper transfers and translucent encaustic wax. The process creates soft, dreamlike paintings where images gently emerge through one another, embracing surprise and the unexpected.

This workshop encourages experimentation and letting go of control, allowing the natural qualities of wax and tissue paper to guide the final image.

Images

  • Pre prepared images on tissue paper will be provided and ready to use
  • You are welcome to bring your own images
  • If unsure what to bring, bring a few images in different sizes
  • Together we will explore what works best for your 8 x 8 inch board
  • Images must be printed on regular photo copy paper, not glossy

What to Expect

  • Guided image selection and simple composition support
  • Demonstrations of tissue paper transfers and encaustic layering
  • An intuitive, relaxed approach that allows the materials to guide the process
  • Exploration of transparency, depth, and soft surface movement

What’s Included

  • All supplies included
  • One 8 x 8 inch wood panel
  • One sample board for testing and experimentation

Participants will leave with a finished photo encaustic piece that feels layered, atmospheric, and quietly expressive.

No prior encaustic experience required. Beginners welcome.

What Is Encaustic?

Encaustic comes from the Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in.” This ancient technique uses heat to melt 100% pure beeswax and damar resin (tree sap).

Notably, the Fayum Mummy Portraits from the 1st Century A.D. showcased realistic details and have remained vibrant due to encaustic's durability. Beeswax is moisture-resistant, preventing deterioration, yellowing, or darkening.

Encaustic can be used alone for its transparency or combined with pigments. Layers of the medium are melted and applied, then reheated to fuse them together.

Beginners welcome!
