BCIT Student Association

A BCIT Student Association pilot event for interdisciplinary and experiential learning.

British Columbia Institute of Technology

EVENT THEME:Data Analytics - Turning Data Into Insight. EVENT BRIEF:Technologies and resources are evolving. As data collection becomes ubiquitous, our abilities to manipulate and create useful insight so too evolves. With ubiquity of data, also comes a reduction of cost, and with a reduction of cost, comes opportunity. This is a 48-hour competition, and space will be made available for you to sleep on-site during the competition period on Saturday if you wish to bring a sleeping bag and pillow to code longer. Food will be provided for Friday dinner, Saturday Lunch, Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast and Sunday lunch. Further logistics details will be provided with an attendee information package. This is closed to members of the BCIT Community (students and alumni) only. If you would like to volunteer, please register for the free volounteer ticket.ATTENDEE OUTCOMES:

Learn practical applications of creating insight from data

Impart the realities of working with students from different educational backgrounds

Realization of weaknesses and strengths for all participants

Create work that can be added to portfolios or resumes.

TEAMS:There will no pre-made teams permitted. All team formations will be managed by the event organizer to ensure all participants are working with students from different areas and a balance of skill between teams. CHALLENGES:Challenges will be provided on the Saturday morning of the event when the real work begins. There will be multiple framed questions as well as one opportunity to hack anything your team wants so long as it fits with the theme of data analytics. ARTIFACTS:During this event, it is expected that students are to create a working tool that solves a given problem. Not only should the tool work, but it should be backed by a business case which identifies real world applications. We expect all projects to be backed by a SWOT analysis and ROI. The evaluations will be split between the business and technological aspects.
