What is Green Infrastructure?In the natural environment, rain is absorbed and filtered by plants and soils. In cities, this natural water cycle is disrupted and rainwater flows across pavement and rooftops. This water picks up pollutants which end up in our natural waterways causing negative impacts on water quality and wildlife. Green infrastructure brings nature into the city, to capture and clean rain water before returning it to the atmosphere and our surrounding oceans and rivers.Green Infrastructure promotes sustainable urban rainwater management and enhances Vancouver’s resilience to climate change by embracing rainwater as a resource that can be captured, cleaned and reused to nourish our city and help us prepare for increasingly challenging weather conditions such as drought, high temperature, extreme storms and flooding.

CITY OF VANCOUVER - GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE IMPLEMENTATION

The City of Vancouver is inviting development and construction industry members to participate in a planning process to create a Rain City Strategy, which will guide how we manage and use rainwater in Vancouver. Our goal is to capture and treat 90% of the rainwater that falls in Vancouver using a combination of green infrastructure and conventional pipe systems. 
Help guide how we will reach our goals to improve water quality, increase resiliency and enhance the livability of Vancouver through sustainable rainwater management.
 
Industry roundtable workshops 
There will be two industry roundtable workshops on March 6th, 2018. One will focus on complex large site developments and the other session is geared towards small scale residential developments. Industry members can choose which session fits better with their business activities. Coffee, tea, and light refreshments with gluten free options will be provided.

The Rain City Strategy will be a high-level strategic plan that may lead to changes in policy or regulations around the management of rainwater on private and public property. You are invited to an industry roundtable workshop to learn more about how the Rain City Strategy may impact your work and share your feedback to help guide this planning process.
