<H3>Special Film Screenings: Zhang Yimou</H3>
Bridging the divide between prestigious art film and rousing popular cinema, the filmography of director Zhang Yimou includes many of the most widely recognized Chinese releases of recent decades, including Raise the Red Lantern, Hero and The Road Home. CCIFF will present a special screening of Zhang’s first film, Red Sorghum, on 16 mm film.
Following the screening of Red Sorghum, CCIFF presents the documentary Zhang Yimou's "Shadow", directed by Wang Peng and produced by Mu Xiaoyong. Wang’s film explores the making of Zhang Yimou’s newest film, the highly anticipated historical thriller 'Shadow.'

Plot: In a rural village in China's eastern province of Shandong during the Second Sino-Japanese War, young Jiu'er is sent by her impoverished parents into a pre-arranged marriage with an old man, Li Datou, who owns a distillery. Narrated from the point of view of Jiu'er’s grandson, who reminisces about his grandmother. Golden Bear Award winner at the 1988 Berlin International Film Festival.

Moreover, we will present the documentary film, We Made a Film in China, directed by Peng Wang and produced by Xiaoyong Mu. An inside look at the creation of Zhang Yimou’s new martial-arts marvel Shadow, Wang Peng’s documentary We Made a Film in China is an examination of Zhang’s bold and inspired creative choices, and the struggles he and his crew faced – and beyond that, of the artistry and industry of filmmaking in modern China. Producer Mu Xiaoyong and members of the crew will be in attendance at the CCIFF screening, to share their thoughts and experiences from the production.
