Event description

Description

In this day long workshop, participants will learn how to conduct community program and service evaluations. There will be a strong focus on how to design data collection tools and protocols for assessing local research efforts.

Those interested in further developing their community-based research skills will benefit from this workshop. This is a follow up to a workshop provided last year by the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust that focused on how to conduct community program and service evaluations. This workshop will focus on the research design side of evaluation, with a concentration on learning how to create data collection tools and protocols for local research efforts. A brief amount of time will be spent focusing on reader-friendly ways to analyze data using infographics.

By participating in this workshop, you will gain the following:

  • An understanding of how to use participatory approaches to research;
  • Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative methods for collecting information that helps you know what difference your program and/or services are making in the community;
  • An opportunity to create (with support) an interview, focus group and survey questionnaire that you can use in your evaluation practice, with a focus on developing effective questions;
  • Knowledge of low cost online infographic tools that can help you communicate the results of your research work and what the research tells you and others about the impacts of your programs and services.

Please bring a laptop so you can work directly on questionnaires that you can use in practice.

The course instructor, Scott Graham, is the Associate Executive Director and Manager of Research, Planning and Consulting at SPARC BC (Social Planning and Research Council of British Columbia). He specializes in applied qualitative and quantitative research, human development service planning, policy development, capacity building, evaluation, knowledge translation, and is keen to work with people who are committed to evidence-based community planning and developmental processes.

This course is being held at the Ucluelet Community Centre from 9am - 4:30pm. Lunch will be provided.

The same workshop is being offered on Friday, January 26, 2017 in Tofino.
