For beginners & writers seeking renewed perspective. Tricks for writers block, creative strategies, and a supportive space to share!
About the Event:
If you're looking to hang out in a third space with fellow creatives and experiment with writing, this is a workshop for you. Whether you’re returning to the page after some time away or finding yourself stalled by perfectionism, this is an invitation to begin again, in good company.
Participants will be led through various text-based prompts to inspire written pieces. "Poetry" is a loose term here! These prompts involve engaging techniques to quell writers block without the intimidation of perfectionism.
Some techniques include: sifting source material, redacting words (black-out poetry), inventing terms or imaginary subjects, text-to-image translations, riddles, list-poems, broken telephone, comic strips, anthropomorphizing letters, and so on!
Sharing is optional. There will be dedicated time at the end for those who would like to share any of their pieces with the group. Supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring your own writing utensils and paper if preferred.
*Please arrive before 6 so we can begin on time.
About the Facilitator:
My writing has appeared in a philosophy journal and in several artist-run magazines. Over the past decade, I have self-published small poetry anthologies and zines, and exhibited text-based works within studio and gallery contexts. I've been facilitating various workshops and teaching professionally all the while.
My undergraduate training in Philosophy and Studio Art influence how I approach writing and facilitating. Truth be told, I'm in the middle of writing my post-grad thesis and I'm craving the freedom of poetic writing more than ever. So I'm making the space for it.
Writing is a segment of what I do through Naeco Studio (check out my website or instagram for more). But even for those who do not primarily identify as poets, working with language as material can open new conceptual and sensory pathways across disciplines!
Accessibility & Venue Information:
The Hive: An Arts Collective is a beautiful space filled with art by local makers. They generously host workshops to support the local arts scene.
The location has a parking lot.
It is located on the first floor, however, there are stairs leading up and the washrooms are located on a lower-level basement.
Masks will be made available to participants but are optional.
The activities will be done seated, though some supplies may be situated at a secondary table.
*If you have any accessibility questions or require accommodation, please reach out to me via email (naecostudio@gmail.com) or instagram @naecostudio before purchasing tickets so I can ensure support.
