What path will you choose?</p><p>NORCAT and Sofvie have brought together leading health and safety experts to discuss how we can help every worker get home safe and sound to their family every day. Join us at Roundtable Express: Interactive Safety Discussions on November 30, 2021, from 1:00-2:30 PM for interactive speed rounds of safety discussions and remarks from Ontario’s recently appointed <strong>Chief Prevention Officer, Dr. Joel Moody</strong>.</p><p>Participants will choose three topics from a list of eight to register for. </p><p>Join us and share your opinions and ideas on how we can all work together to make workplace health and safety incidents a thing of the past.</p>

<h1>Topics and Speakers</h1><h2>Achieving ‘Boots on the Ground’ Compliance</h2><p>In this session, we will discuss methods to manage workplace compliance and improve safety. Hear about innovative solutions to implement, measure, and monitor compliance and how to overcome roadblocks. Learn how to successfully achieve ‘boots on the ground’ compliance to ultimately increase worker confidence, workplace efficiencies, and business performance.</p><h3>Speakers</h3><p><strong>Jason Bubba, Chief Operating Officer, NORCAT</strong></p><p>Jason has a vision that every worker goes home safe and sound to their family every day, he is dedicated to developing and delivering world-class programs, services, and resources to reduce injuries, save lives, and enhance productivity in the workplace. Jason has been involved in training development since 1995 and has been at the forefront of learning technology development including simulation, virtual reality, augmented reality, and eLearning. He works with new start-up mines and global mining companies, helping them to formulate their training strategies and learning technology implementation.</p><p><strong>Paul Primeau, Security Manager and Risk Lead, Lake Shore Gold</strong></p><p>Paul has over 20 years of experience in the industrial and mining resource sectors. As the security manager and risk lead for Lake Shore Gold, Paul contributes to strong health, safety, and risk-based approach within the organization.  His background experience in crises management and emergency response as a Government representative with the Canadian Forces allows him to understand a holistic approach to health and safety and the opportunities that technology can bring to the table. </p>

<h2>Confidently Tackle Your Next Audit </h2><p>The goal of an external audit is to validate your Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) against a standard set of requirements, such as ISO 45001, Certificate of Recognition (COR), or other recognized standards. In this panel, Cam and Ben will speak to the items required to prepare for an audit, how to succeed, what to expect, and will reduce the stigma of failure. Participants will leave the panel feeling confident and ready to tackle their next audit. </p><h3>Speakers</h3><p><strong>Ben Snyman, CEO, AuditSoft</strong></p><p>Ben holds a business degree (B.Comm) and a postgraduate law degree (LLB) from the University of Stellenbosch. He was admitted as an attorney of the Supreme Court of South Africa; and also holds an MBA from Cardiff University. Ben has over 20 years of experience in operational risk, management including legal and regulatory compliance risk. Over the last 15 years, he has focused on developing and delivering technology-based solutions for the occupational health and safety space. He is the co-founder and CEO of SafetyVantage Inc., which specializes in online occupational health and safety learning solutions; and AuditSoft Inc. which specializes in technology-based solutions to help organizations obtain and maintain COR across Canada, including Ontario. He is also the original founder of eCompliance Management Solutions Inc, now part of the Alcumus Group.</p><p><strong>Cam Mitchell, CRSP, VP Business Development &amp; Auditor, Audeng International</strong></p><p>Cam Mitchell is a founding partner of Audeng International. He has a total of 16 years of health and safety experience, with varying levels of HSE responsibility. He holds the designation of Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and is an accredited External COR™ Auditor for the IHSA.  As a consultant and auditor, Cam has 10 years of experience. His experience covers multiple industries including construction, energy, manufacturing, transportation, retail, government, and mining.</p>

<h2>In-the-Field HSMS Implementation and Change Management</h2><p>Change isn’t always easy, especially when it impacts the way we work. Many workers have established a very comfortable rhythm in their day-to-day activities, and even the smallest change can carry unforeseen and drastic ripple effects. Our panelists will discuss how to increase your chance of change management success by exploring the benefit of proper planning, communication, and strengthening safe behaviour supported by checks and balances. </p><h3>Speakers</h3><p><strong>Eric Demers, Health Safety and Training Manager, Technica Mining</strong></p><p>Currently serving as Technica Mining’s Health, Safety and Training Manager, Eric has spent his career managing teams in the field and sculpting the future of health and safety. Understanding the needs and capabilities of individuals, fostering relationships with some of Northern Ontario’s most prominent health and safety organizations, and exploring the latest technology are only a few of the skills Eric has developed over the years. With this unique combination of skills and experience, Eric is positioned to understand the current and future opportunities within health and safety frameworks and how to address them as we move towards the future.</p><p><strong>Danielle Barker, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager, Castonguay Blasting</strong></p><p>For over 10 years, Danielle Barker has worked at Castonguay Blasting in health and safety. Currently, as the Health, Safety and Environmental Manager. Her responsibilities include the development and implementation of health and safety procedures, on-site assessments, training and safety equipment quality control. Her number one priority is for everyone to return home safely. Because she cares deeply for each team member she is continuously improving protocols, listening to employee feedback and developing safety equipment specific to the industry. Danielle is the proud, busy mom of Seth and Romi. “They have taught me the true meaning of stopping and smelling the roses.”  Her passion for science, reading and the outdoors started at a young age and continues today! “Working for a drilling and blasting company is an excellent fit for me as it has led to exploration and discoveries beyond my imagination.” Danielle is a graduate from Laurentian University with an Honours Bachelor of  Science and a professional certification in Occupational Health and Safety.</p>

<h2>Mastering The Basics</h2><p> With artificial intelligence, machine learning, wearable technology, and plenty of new innovations hitting the market every day, the world of health and safety is rapidly changing. Are you ready? Many organizations have a lot of work to do before they can take on these next steps. Panelists will delve into the basics of health and safety in the workplace covering topics such as the nature of human behaviour, concise communication, active accountability, and repeating these basics until they become second nature. These are the fundamentals needed to establish a culture of inherent safety.</p><h3>Speakers</h3><p><strong>Gus Minor, Chief Innovation Officer, Sofvie</strong></p><p>The visionary behind Sofvie’s current and future abilities and potential. As a former underground worker, Gus possesses first-hand experience and knowledge of all of the organizational and communication obstacles that many industries face. Having his own personal experience with workplace tragedy, you can count on Gus to be the proponent of change that pushes EHS management software which will drive the path towards a Zero Harm and well-informed workplace. Starting by putting people first!</p><p><strong>Nadine Trodel, Director, Health, Safety, Environment &amp; Training, Minto Explorations Ltd</strong></p><p>Nadine Trodel has over 25 years of experience in the mining industry focusing on risk management, health and safety, training and continuous improvement. She has held various senior positions at DMC Mining Services, Westmoreland Coal Company, K+S Potash Canada and recently Workplace Safety North. Nadine has two science degrees in Microbiology and Socio-Cultural Anthropology and spent the first part of her career as a microbiologist in laboratory and field. Although she possesses a wealth of knowledge in many complex areas, her leadership insights reside in simplicity; become an expert at the basics and never lose your sense of humour. </p>

<h2>Navigating Compliance and Due Diligence</h2><p>In this session, panelists will discuss the challenges around navigating the various legislative compliance requirements and the several ways you can demonstrate due diligence. Due diligence is much more than avoiding penalties and fines – it has a profound impact on the work environment, and the safety of employees, family members, and the community. Participants will engage in discussions that explore how to determine your compliance requirements, how to get started, and what you will need to protect yourself and ensure due diligence.</p><h3>Speakers</h3><p><strong>Brandon Vance, MHK, B.PHE, HSE Consultant - Advisory Services, NORCAT</strong></p><p>As Health, Safety and Environment Consultant with NORCAT’s Advisory Services, Brandon works with clients around the world to deliver compliance and risk management solutions in the mining, forestry, construction and education sectors. He also works with internal and client subject matter experts to deliver talent and human capital customized solutions to improve talent management practices, training and development initiatives and support overall workforce education and training. Brandon holds a Masters in Human Kinetics from Laurentian University (MHK), and a Bachelors of Physical and Health Education (BPHE), with a specialization in Health Promotion. </p><p><strong>Alain Perreault, Northern Regional Mining Program Coordinator, Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development</strong></p><p>Alain Perreault has over 20 years of experience in the mining industry with a focus on training and health and safety. As the Regional Program Manager for the Ministry of Labour Skills and Training Development, he oversees health and safety inspections in the mining industry across Ontario. Alain’s previous employment includes Training Supervisor for DeBeers Canada and has held multiple positions at Boart Longyear including Supervisor, Trainer, Safety Coordinator, and Driller. Alain holds a Bachelor’s Dress in Mathematics and Education from Nipissing University and began his career teaching mathematics and physics to secondary students. Alain is happily married, has five children and five grandchildren.

Hira assists clients in the mining, forestry, construction and education sectors in their journey to accreditation.</p><p><strong>Janet Bewers CRSP CHSC CSP, Health and Safety Excellence Consultant, Workplace Health and Safety Services, WSIB Ontario </strong></p><p>Janet has over 20 years of experience within the prevention system in Ontario support businesses in the manufacturing, agriculture and service sectors.  She holds a CRSP and CHSC designation and is passionate about promoting the Excellence program to support the health and safety journey of Ontario businesses.</p>

<h2>The Health and Safety Management System Blueprint</h2><p>A Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) is a collection of structured, organizational policies and processes, providing a systematic approach for managing safety risks in operations. In this session, participants will learn about the importance of an HSMS implemented by employers to manage risks, establish controls, and minimize the incidence of injury and illness to their workers. In addition, participants will discuss the value of creating an effective workplace-specific HSMS. </p><h3>Speakers</h3><p><strong>Trina Hayden, B.Sc. (Hons), CRSP, CHRL, Director - Advisory Services, NORCAT</strong></p><p>Trina comes from a diverse professional background. Her career has spanned many sectors, including mining, construction, oil and gas, and technical trades. She has a solid understanding and direct experience with governance, risk and compliance management through the development, implementation and management of integrated programs and initiatives. As Director of Advisory Services at NORCAT, Trina works with clients around the world on a variety of strategic and tactical projects. </p><p><strong>Darren Toner, Manager of Health, Safety, Environment and Risk, North Atlantic Capital Projects, Vale Sudbury</strong></p><p>Darren has over 20 years of experience in the industrial and mining sector with a diverse health, safety and environment background, including emergency and crisis management, mine rescue, systems development and implementation, risk management, and various senior management roles. Darren currently serves as the Chair of the Ontario Mining Association’s Safety and Training Committee, is a member of the Workplace Safety North Mining Advisory Committee, he represents the mining industry on the Mining Legislative Review Committee and is a Mentor in the Goodman School of Mines Mineral Resource Industry Leadership Program. Grounded by a solid systems background, Darren brings the basic fundamentals of safety together with a strong focus on people and leadership.</p>

<h2>Understanding OHS Training</h2><p>High-quality Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training equips workers and supervisors with the knowledge and skills to identify health and safety risks in the workplace and take steps to mitigate them. Highly trained workers strengthen the health and safety culture within their workplaces and reduce workplace injuries and fatalities. Join MLTSD Training and Awareness Branch director Kate Cowan and NORCAT GTA manager Dan Fleming to discuss key issues and upcoming ministry initiatives related to OHS training.</p><h3>Speakers</h3><p><strong>Dan Fleming, CRSP, CHSC,  Manager, Greater Toronto Area, NORCAT </strong></p><p>Dan is an experienced health safety professional with a demonstrated history of providing health and safety expertise to the Ontario construction industry.  During Dan’s 30 years career in the construction industry, he has had the opportunity to deliver and train health and safety professionals on risk management and COR auditing principles. In March of 2018, the OGCA presented Dan with the prestigious Doug Chalmers Award for providing significant contributions to the advancement of Occupational Health and Safety in Ontario.  Dan is a current member of the MLTSD Prevention Council, providing advice and guidance to the Minister of Labour and Chief Prevention Officer.</p><p><strong>Kate Cowan, Director of the Training and Awareness Branch, Prevention Office, Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development</strong></p><p>Kate Cowan has dedicated her dynamic career to supporting individuals and communities through her work with the Ontario Public Service (OPS), its’ agencies, and as a committed volunteer.</p><p>Always looking to challenge the status quo and take on meaningful ventures, she has supported enterprise-wide transformational strategies in several ministries, including Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Ministry of Community and Social Services, Ministry of Education, the Ontario Women’s Directorate and Treasury Board Secretariat.  Kate is currently the Director of the Training and Awareness Branch, Prevention Office, Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development.</p>
