Who Are We?We are a non-profit film society dedicated to presenting significant, challenging, and essential works of cinema art in Calgary.During our season, which runs from October to April, we screen films weekly, in curated programs which situate each film in a thematic and historical context.We do this because we believe cinema is an essential form of artistic, social, and political expression. Audiences should be able to engage with a wide range of cinematic expression, not only with what is commercially viable. We believe in the power of sharing these experiences with other people in a theatrical setting and we strive to cultivate a community around that experience.

Calgary Cinematheque

Calgary Cinematheque invites you to a screening of Safe. 
At 7:00PM, as the last attendees take their seats, the main event will begin! Calgary Cinematheque is pleased to present Safe (1995), written and directed by Todd Haynes, as part of the 2016-17 FOCUS Series: AMERICAN INDEPENDENT CINEMA OF THE NINETIES.
The 1990’s was a high point for American independent film and many of the directors who entered with a bang, like Kelly Reichardt and Todd Haynes, continue today to create works that stand out at Sundance and Tribeca. This series spotlights the breakout films that pushed against mainstream norms and first brought attention to these unique voices.
A suburban housewife suddenly finds herself "allergic to the 20th century”. Terrence Rafferty, of the New Yorker, stated “...[Julianne] Moore, in a nearly unplayable role, is amazingly vivid and touching; this is a heartbreaking portrait of a woman in full, panicked retreat from life”.
Todd Haynes’ thriller/drama “Safe” gave Moore’ her first leading role in a feature film, and was released to critical acclaim both in the U.K., as well as in the U.S. In 1995, DOP Alex Nepomniaschy won the award for Best Cinematography at the Boston Society of Film Critics Awards. At the 1996 Independent Spirit Awards it was nominated for Best Director (Todd Haynes), Best Feature, Best Female Lead (Julianne Moore), and Best Screenplay (Todd Haynes).

 Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
Plaza Theatre and Kensington have on-street parking, and parkades off 9th St SW or off Memorial Drive SW.
 
Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
Your tickets can be transferrable under approval by CCS, simply update your registration accordingly before attending event.
 
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
Yes! PLEASE present your ticket or smartphone for scanning at the door. In-person purchases accepted via cash and EventBrite only.
 
The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?
Absolutely, a ticket makes a great gift and shared experience!
