(Sea)Bin Dive!

For more than 100 years PortsToronto has worked with its partners at the federal, provincial and municipal levels to enhance the economic growth of the City of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. Le français suit.Since 2019, the Toronto Harbour has been home to trash trapping devices called Seabins that work to divert tens of thousands of pieces of small plastic from Lake Ontario each year. These floating waste bins act like a vaccum, scooping up floating debris as small as a grain of rice. This year, the Trash Trapping Program is seeing its biggest year yet – with 12 Seabins deployed throughout the Toronto Harbour, including six right here on the Toronto Waterfront – and we want to celebrate with you! Get hands-on with University of Toronto Trash Team researchers and learn how to characterize micro and macro plastics collected by the Trash Trapping Program's Seabins on the Toronto Waterfront. <ul><li>How do we get collected plastics/debris out of the Seabins? See a demonstration of the Trash Team’s unique extraction technique and get up close and personal with the Seabins!</li></ul><ul><li>Get hands on and contribute to important plastic pollution research! Characterize macroplastics within bin materials and record results in a data sheet. </li></ul><ul><li>Learn about microplastics! Did you know that vegetation acts as a magnet for tiny microplastics? Learn more where microplastics come from, how we can remove them from the water and what we can do to prevent them from getting there in the first place. </li></ul>The (Sea)Bin Dive is free, but space is limited. It is led by <a href="https://www.portstoronto.com/home.aspx" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">PortsToronto</a> and the <a href="https://uofttrashteam.ca/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">U of T Trash Team</a>, in partnership with the Waterfront Business Improvement Area (<a href="https://www.waterfrontbia.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">WBIA</a>) and the City of Toronto BIA Office Innovation Grant, <a href="https://www.nieuport.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nieuport Aviation</a>, the <a href="https://www.torontozoo.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Toronto Zoo</a>, <a href="https://harbourfrontcentre.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Harbourfront Centre</a> and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (<a href="https://trca.ca/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">TRCA</a>). It is part of the Toronto Inner Harbour Floatables Strategy, a partnership led by TRCA, and of the <a href="https://oceanconservancy.org/trash-free-seas/international-coastal-cleanup/trash-trap-network/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">International Trash Trapping Network</a>, an initiative led by the U of T Trash Team and Ocean Conservancy, and has influenced the launch of similar trash trapping and data collection programs throughout the Great Lakes and beyond.Questions? La participation est gratuite!Depuis 2019, le havre de Toronto est équipé de « Seabins », des dispositifs de piégeage des déchets qui permettent d’extraire chaque année du lac Ontario des dizaines de milliers de petits morceaux de plastique. Ces poubelles flottantes agissent comme des aspirateurs et peuvent ainsi récupérer des débris aussi petits que des grains de riz. Cette année, le programme de piégeage des déchets bats des records – 12 dispositifs Seabin ont été installés dans le havre de Toronto, dont 6 ici dans le secteur riverain – et nous souhaitons fêter cela avec vous! Venez découvrir en personne le travail des chercheurs de la Trash Team de l’Université de Toronto, qui vous apprendront à décrire les micro- et macroplastiques collectés dans le secteur riverain par les Seabins du programme de piégeage des déchets. <ul><li>Comment nous y prenons-nous pour sortir des Seabins les plastiques et débris qu’elles contiennent? Assistez à une démonstration de la technique d’extraction unique utilisée par la Trash Team, et venez voir les Seabins de plus près!</li><li>Rendez-vous sur le terrain pour apporter concrètement votre contribution à d’importants travaux de recherche sur la pollution plastique! Étudiez les caractéristiques des macroplastiques piégés par les poubelles, et consignez les résultats de vos observations sur une fiche récapitulative. </li><li>C’est l’occasion d’améliorer votre connaissance des microplastiques! Saviez-vous que la végétation attire comme un aimant les minuscules microplastiques? Apprenez-en davantage sur la provenance des microplastiques, la manière dont nous pouvons les sortir du milieu aquatique, et les mesures que nous pouvons prendre pour éviter leur intrusion dans ce milieu. </li></ul>*Événement se tiendra en anglais seulement. Programme de piégeage des déchetsLe Programme de piégeage des déchets de PortsToronto fait appel à une technologie spécialisée et mise sur la recherche centrée sur les solutions afin de réduire la pollution plastique et de protéger les eaux de Toronto, dans l’intérêt des générations futures. Il est dirigé conjointement avec la Trash Team de l’Université de Toronto, en collaboration avec The Waterfront Business Improvement Area (WBIA) et grâce à une subvention à l&#x27;innovation du bureau responsable des zones d&#x27;amélioration commerciale de la Ville de Toronto, Nieuport Aviation, le Toronto Zoo, Harbourfront Centre et l’Office de protection de la nature de Toronto et de la région (OPNTR). Le Programme de piégage de déchets, qui s’inscrit à la fois dans la stratégie axée sur la gestion des matières flottantes dans l’arrière-port (un projet de partenariat mené par l’OPNTR) et dans l’International Trash Trap Network (une initiative coordonnée par la Trash Team de l’Université de Toronto et Ocean Conservancy), a inspiré la création d’autres programmes similaires de piégeage de déchets et de collecte de données connexes dans la région des Grands Lacs et plus loin.Des questions?
