The possibility that is education: Re-imagining knowledge, teaching and learning in the intersecting realities

The Second Kamloops EdCamp will take place on Saturday March 29th from 10.15am to 2.15pm on the third floor of the Arts and Education Building on the Thompson Rivers University Campus. Please join us for a half day of dynamic discussions and networking. Parking is free on campus that day.What is an EdCamp?EdCamp is a concept which has been developed over the last decade in North America. It positions itself as an anti-conference, or as a disrupting ‘happening’ within an academic professional development landscape very much focused on a hierarchical ‘stage on stage’ model. Instead, the process in EdCamps is entirely participatory and democratic; it is also free. The principle is to pull together community stakeholders, for half a day, around a pre-determined educational theme that is topical and pressing for the region. Participants gather mid-morning for coffee around this theme and discuss conversationally what their various interests are within this topic area, as well as what stakeholder group they represent. Break-out groups then form organically and separate out to discuss a specific facet of the overarching theme.Edcamps are free public events that leverage the knowledge and experiences of attendees by allowing educators to collaboratively determine topics for discussion the day of the event. Educators facilitate sessions by using their experiences to drive conversation with their peers. Educators are encouraged to find Edcamp sessions that best meet their needs to maximize learning (adapted from Digital Promise, 2025).This is an event which is unique in the networking it allows, the connections it creates, and the democratic flavour it encourages, across community. It is known to strengthen ties between universities and local community by supporting a free-flowing exchange and sharing of perspectives. It is a stand alone type of event that needs to be tried once to be understood, but all fall to the charm of this format. There are many EdCamps happening each year across North America. Tenets of the Edcamp Model: <ul><li>Free and open to all: Edcamps never charge a fee and are open to educators of all levels, subjects and schools. Edcamps are designed to expand professional learning communities by encouraging educator participation across schools and districts.</li><li>Participant driven: Edcamps allow participants to collaboratively determine session topics. Typically, session topics are sourced from those attending the Edcamp and the session board is built the day of the Edcamp with participation from participants. However, online Edcamps are allowed to source session topics through their registration process in order to best prepare for their online event.</li><li>Experience, not experts: Edcamps encourage participants to facilitate sessions by sharing experiences. At Edcamp, we encourage conversations, not planned presentations.</li><li>Rule of Two Feet/Clicks: Edcamps suggest participants find sessions that meet their needs to maximize learning. If you are in a session that is not meeting your needs, we encourage you to move on to another session that may be better suited. Online Edcamps use the Rule of Two Clicks to find a session that better meets their needs!</li><li>Vendor Free: Edcamps may not sell any goods/services or require attendees to purchase goods or services. The foundations of learning – what, how, and why we teach – are re-defined by promising and perilous forces. At the intersection of crisis and possibility, how do we re-imagine and re-think education that is not merely inclusive but actively transformative?EdCamp invites scholars, educators, policymakers, community members, parents, students, and activists to engage in a critical and imaginative dialogue about the possibility that is education. How can we understand AI in relation to knowledge, teaching and learning? How does geo-political conflict shape/reshape curricula? What roles can education play in fostering non-violence and reconciliation? How do we move beyond performative commitments to equality and toward genuine transformation in classrooms and communities?As we navigate these urgent questions, we believe that education should not be considered a fixed institution but a living, evolving practice capable of responding to the complexities of our time with vision, courage, and ethics. EdCamp seeks to create a space for engaging in such a complicated conversation, inviting participants to envision sustainable, and profoundly human futures for education.
