Sense I.T. Symposium

Established in 1994, the Inclusive Media and Design Centre (previously Centre for Learning Technologies) designs, creates, and evaluates inclusive media. Our efforts are directed towards evaluating the existing conditions of production and reception of media to create solutions for access and enjoyment of media. We do so by:Exploring modalities of experienceExamining policy and methodologies in media industriesCreating tools and technology for making inclusive mediaEvaluating and documenting the effects of our effortsMany of our projects focus on technological accessibility for users of all abilities. Our current projects include:Alternative Audio Description: examining alternative approaches to audio description in television and live theatreLiveDescribe, a free amateur audio description toolEnhanced Captioning: examining alternatives to traditional captioning in television and moviesEnACT (Enhanced and Affective Captioning Tool), a free captioning toolMusic Visualization: a visual representation of music that conveys meaning and informationThe Emoti-Chair: a chair designed to allow Deaf and hard of hearing individuals to feel musicThe Vibrochord: a keyboard designed to play purely tactile music on the Emoti-ChairSignlink Studio and Signlink CMS, a program designed for Deaf and hard of hearing vloggersWe currently employ a group of undergraduate students, master’s students, PhD candidates and three full time staff at our facilities at Ryerson University.

Inclusive Media & Design Centre

A workshop showcasing the WebMoti project. WebMoti is a technology that combines visual, aural and vibrotactile stimuli and allows children and individuals with autism to attend school or therapy session when they are not able to do so physically. The event will focus on immersive sensory tech and will offer technology installations, demonstrations. Speakers will be given 10 to 15 minutes to present their work and installation. The entire event will be kid-friendly and accessible.
Every hour or half hour from 2:00PM to 8:00PM, speakers will present their work.
