SFU Continuing Studies (City Program)

In the footsteps of SFU's successful, long-running Philosopher’s Café series, the City Program presents the Data Café. The #SFUdatacafe will be moderated by Andy Yan, director of the SFU City Program. To prime the conversation, we'll start with a few data professionals from the city and region. From there, we welcome attendees to share their data work about the City of Vancouver and region, including their techniques and lessons learned. While we appreciate tales of triumph, we encourage stories of ongoing data and visualization challenges, allowing the audience to pitch technical advice or offer words of encouragement. If you wish to present, please keep your presentation under seven minutes in length and we’ll have a laptop with Powerpoint and an Internet connection.
There will be time for networking afterwards. Speakers:
"Measuring Pent Up Demand for Purpose-Built Rental in Canada's Cities" (by Wendy Waters) 
 Wendy Waters is the Senior Director, Research & Strategy, GWL Realty Advisors and has been working in real estate strategy research for 15 years; she specializes in bringing together numerical and qualitative methodologies to understand real estate markets, asset performance, and to help shape investment strategy for GWLRA's institutional and pension fund clients. She has a Ph.D. in economic history from the University of Arizona.
 
"Fire Traps, Rat Traps and Complete Communities: Triangulating Quantitative and Qualitative Neighbourhood Data" (by Craig E. Jones) 
 Craig E. Jones, is a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia. His current research is a comparative study of five rental neighbourhoods in Metro Vancouver’s suburban centres. Craig employs a mixed-methods approach to incorporate a variety of data sources in order to study how transportation and land use planning, municipal housing policy, and the development industry have increased redevelopment pressure on aging, affordable, purpose-built rental apartment buildings that provide housing options to marginalized renters such as low-income people, recent immigrants, and refugees.
 
“Let's Talk Spatial” (by Mehdi Aminipouri) 
 Mehdi is a PhD student in the Department of Geography at Simon Fraser University. Using urban surface energy balance models, his research aims to assess the effectiveness of urban greening and reflective roofs in keeping Vancouver’s urban neighborhoods cool and people safe during an extreme heat event.
 
"Pricking The Housing 604 Bubble - Is Anything Working?" (by Louie Dinh) Louie Dinh is a MSc. student in Computer Science at UBC. He applies machine learning techniques to genomics data. However, this is unrelated to the project he's will be talking about. This presentation assesses the housing situation through the lens of an independent data source. Currently, governments are trying to address the issues of vacancy and sky rocketing costs in the lower mainland. But any data releases, from the government and from realtor's, are plagued by conflicts of interest. Let's take a look at the some scraped data, and how that might provide some externally validation and accountability.  
 
"Cancensus: a new approach to reproducible research using Canadian Census data" (by Dmitry Shkolnik) 
Data Scientist at Destination Canada with an interest in Open Data and building tools to improve access to data.
 
Lesser-known (free) sources of geospatial data (by Julie Jones) 
Julie Jones is GIS & Map Librarian and Librarian for Geography at Simon Fraser University. She supports researchers from all disciplines using GIS and maps in their work through consultations, workshops, and developing the Library's geospatial data and map collections.
 
"Visual Analytics in a Big Data World" (by Maha El Meseery) Maha El Meseery is PhD. Student at school of interactive arts and technology working on developing systems to provide better support for visual data exploration. She is also working as VIVA visual analtyics mentor consulting clients, SFU faculty and students on how to analyze thier data.  After her graduation a B.Sc. in computer engineering, she worked five years as software engineer, she then moved to research working in various fields including image processing, information visualization, and visual analytics. During her Master studies at University of Regina, she worked on various visual analytics projects.
